A heads up. A worker from La Manzanilla, missing in action, reports that his three children have measles. Most of you are probably vaccinated but precaution is the watch word for this highly infectous virus. | -------------------Re: measles

I guess that is important for adults....but all the kids when we were young got measles and noone ever died ...we also got chickenpox, and the flu....it was just a normal part of childhood illness in those days for some reason. And the adults were not vaccinated in those days but I do not remember anyone (the adults that is) getting those diseases.....maybe my childhood memories are just selective??? I would like to know what has changed and why everyone is so afraid to let their kids get these diseases which gives them natural immunity?? Linda Mandala

From wikipedia: "In 1980, 2.6 million people died of it, and in 1990, 545,000 died; by 2014, global vaccination programs had reduced the number of deaths from measles to 73,000. Despite these trends, rates of disease and deaths increased from 2017 to 2019 due to a decrease in immunization." additionally, as noted because the children are ill, the parents cannot work as they are nursing kids. That is a problem if you have a marginal income to begin with. As a communicable disease, should the populace not be aware of the risk, this can quickly spread through a community. | -------------------Re: measles

Measles causes lowered immune function for up to two years after infection. There is a significant increase in secondary infection post-measles. This includes an increase in chances of a fatal infection, especially with children. Things like pneumonia that would have been inconvenient, can become life threatening. You are right about the old days. If you were born before 1957 then you are considered immune from previous exposure. If you were born between 1957-1966, you may have had an ineffective vaccine and might need a booster. There is a Titler blood antibody test that can determine immunity. If you work with a high risk community like hospitals, schools or with someone with a compromised immune system, the CDC recommends two vaccinations, 4 weeks apart. | -------------------Re: measles

Thanks Scott. . . good information. That's exactly what my physician told me last week. We've had uncomfortable conversations with our kids about immunizing their children. Never, never use the word unenlightened in that conversation. | -------------------Re: measles

Thanks Scott for all this information. I am happy to hear there are titer tests that one can do to know if you have antibodies already and do not need a vaccination. It is a good thing to do if someone might be worried. Check first. Linda Mandala | -------------------Re: measles

Kids did die in the 50's from measles...and this year more than 1200 have died on Madagascar alone. Because we are (thankfully) becoming a global people...letting measles spread even in health-care rich countries can kill elswhere. | -------------------
