Phone news

Note that this is supposed to take effect August 3. We’ll see if it truly happens. As of August 3, 2019 phone calling will be much simpler. The 01, 044, 045 will be gone for national calling as will be the "1" on international calls and the need to add a "1" after 52 when calling a Mexican cell phone from another country. Local calls: all numbers will be 10 digits. In Mexico City for example, 551-234-5678 will be the format. Cell phone calls: you only have to dial 10 digits. Example: 551-234-5678. National calls: whether you call from a cell phone or landline, you will not have to dial 01. International calls: if calling from abroad to a cell phone number in Mexico you will no longer have to add “1” after the “52”. Example: 52-331-234-5678. In the case of calls from Mexico to abroad, nothing changes.

I'm wondering how this is working so far as I'm trying to call both a land line and a cell phone in La Manzanilla from B.C., and none of the above seems to be working. Can anyone help me out? | -------------------Re: help?

From the USA: Call a Mexican cell phone 011-521-10 digits cell phone number. Call a Mexican land line 011-52-10 digits land line. I do not know about Canada.

I've just gotten help from Shaw here in BC and discovered that it IS still necessary to preface the 10 digit number with 011-52. | -------------------Re: help?

I havenʻt tried it personally but the quote below shows the difference between current and ʻold schoolʻ methods of dialing to Mexico. It is from the link https://yucalandia.com/answers-to-common-questions/phone-calls-to-and-from-mexico-dialing-made-easy/ that was posted on the message board in the summer: "~ Calling to Mexico from the US or Canada: Dial a ‘+’ at the beginning of the number** … then dial the country code … and add the number +52-999-555-5555 … **Dialing a ‘+’ from within any country (now) tells the phone company computers that you want an international line ~ Old School Dialing to a Mexican land-line phone: Dial 011-52 & the ten digit number (i.e. 011-52-999-924-1234) Old School Dialing to a Mexican cell phone: Dial 011-52-1 & the ten digit number (i.e. 011-52-1-999-924-1234)"

Old school/new school? Who knows? Today, I, under instructions from Shaw (my phone provider), prefaced the 10 digit number with 011-52, and it worked! I'd tried the new school directions as noted at the top of this thread and was unable to make contact. Anyone else have recent experience? | -------------------Re: old/new

Calls from Canada or the US to Mexico must always be preceded by 011 52 because these are international calling codes. The only difference now is that you no longer add a "1" before calling a Mexican cell phone number. All of the other changes apply to domestic calls only. A + sign is kind of like an "instruction" that indicates an international call, rather than a digit that you actually dial, because not all countries use 011 (plus country code) to dial an international number. (This system applies to calling from phone to phone; I don't know how calls are made from a computer.) | -------------------
