La Manzanilla Hermosa's public waste can project

One goal of La Manzanilla Hermosa is to help make Bahia de Tenacatita the most plastic-free bay in the world. To support this goal, we recently placed 50 public waste cans and will place more in 2020. Many households and businesses make waste cans available for public use, which enables La Manzanilla Hermosa's project to cover more territory. It would be nice if people could increase tips they pay our heroic garbage workers and let them know that part of your tip is for emptying public waste cans. I'd like to acknowledge people who assisted with this project. Francisco Javier, the Delegado, secured La Huerta's commitment for garbage truck workers to empty the cans on their normal route. Judy Saling delivered stencils and paint from the U.S. Mary Jo Oberg donated and prepared a test can (we learned a lot from it!). Alan García Ceballos delivered the cans from Guadalajara. Jesús Zaragoza Cortés Carajo) drilled drainage holes and painted lettering. Valerie Denford helped identify locations. Amairani Jiménez Ambriz and Octavio Guzmán Figueroa provided a vehicle and labor to place the cans. Cruz Gomez delivered paint for next year's cans (and 12 more litter grabbers for the lending library). Linda Koenig and Mary Jo Oberg helped inventory cans after Hurricane Lorena (only one was missing but it magically reappeared in its spot a few weeks later). The project is funded by money I inherited from my mother. I vividly recall when she got out of the driver's seat at a stoplight (in Houston, Texas) in the early 1960s to chastise someone who had thrown trash from their car. I am not as brave and people are more armed and dangerous now (especially in the USA). I am grateful she taught me that litter is awful and left resources that enable me to help reduce plastic in our bay in a non-confrontational manner that does not endanger my life! Every year and for many reasons, there is noticeably less litter in La Manzanilla. We hope this project will help reduce plastic that flows into Bahia de Tenacatita. Way to go Vicki! We've had litter grabbers at our casa since our casa was finished and they get used. One of our returning guests, Patrick, can be seen daily putting them to good use when he is in town. I hope that your and others donations of time and money inspires the community to work together to meet your goal. Art | ------------------Re: La Manzanilla Hermosa's public waste can project

Wonderful, Vicki, you've brought me to tears with your dedication and all the good works you've accomplished. My gratitude, on this Thanksgiving weekend, extends to all the helpers you've named and to the many out there who just pick up after themselves and others. | ------------------Re: La Manzanilla Hermosa's public waste can project

And yes to your thought on tipping the guys who come and take all our waste...they make little and appreciate your gesture of a few pesos now and then! | ------------------Re: La Manzanilla Hermosa's public waste can project

Great Work everyone, Also if people can clip, tear, scissor etc plastics before putting into the bins it may save the pieces from one day ending up on sea creatures or land mammals , often causing strangulation . Example beer six packs that use plastic rings .... | ------------------Re: La Manzanilla Hermosa's public waste can project

Question... can we expect to see some of the blue garbage cans over in the El Campo area of La manz? I don't recall seeing any over here as yet. I think the tamarindo workers would use the bins if they were available in this area. We always put out 30 to 50 pesos for the Garbage guys. | ------------------Re: La Manzanilla Hermosa's public waste can project

Yes. Probably in Feb. I hope the next batch will be green but blue is the most common color available. | ------------------ |
