car rental from Manzanillo airport

This year I'm thinking of renting a car from the airport in Manzanillo. Guide books about Mexico caution about insurance demands. Does anyone have recommendations or things to be cautious about? | ------------------Re: car rental from Manzanillo airport

I'm not sure what's available to rent at the airport, and there may be some good deals, but for many years, people on this board have been recommending Crazy Cactus (out of Barra de Navidad). We actually booked with them a few years ago but our situation changed and we cancelled - no problemas dealing with them. I would assume that they would meet you with the rental car at the airport, but you could verify this. Others "here" may have more recent info on them or the airport. Anyways, that's mis dos pesos... https://crazycactus.net | ------------------Re: car rental from Manzanillo airport

We use sixt from ZLO. With liability insurance. Very reasonable and professional. Good experience both times. | ------------------Re: car rental from Manzanillo airport

If you opt to not take the full insurance coverage I strongly recommend you take pictures of any and I do mean any existing damage to the vehicle. The last thing you need on your way to your departure flight is an argument with the car rental people. | ------------------Re: car rental from Manzanillo airport

Have used Sixt out of ZLO a few times and have found them to be nothing less than straight up every time. | ------------------Re: car rental from Manzanillo airport

Here's a 3rd vote for SIXT -- good value, never a problem. I generally just buy the (required) liability insurance, and have never had a "problem" with returning a damaged car. The problem I have is getting the desk agent at SIXT to help me decline all the additional coverages. Sometimes that is made a little easier if you book online, in advance, and show your Total Due from the SIXT website. I also use and love Crazy Cactus, but they won't come pick you up at the airport. Which means you get to pay for both the taxi ride AND the car rental. | ------------------Re: car rental from Manzanillo airport

Check with your credit card company because if you have a gold or platinum they will or use to cover the insurance of a rental for two weeks if you decline the insurance from the rental company. | ------------------Re: car rental from Manzanillo airport

I vote for Crazy Cactus. We've rented form them three times - extended periods. Maybe they won't pick you up at the airport, but the absence of other bs is well worth it. | ------------------Re: car rental from Manzanillo airport

But the coverage through your credit card most likely will NOT cover the required liability coverage. | ------------------Re: car rental from Manzanillo airport

Thanks for all the suggestions. I looked at Sixt--very, very expensive. I also talked to the company that covers the insurance for Visa. They said if the rental company insists on buying insurance that in the event of an accident my Visa insurance would cover the deductible--that's good to know. But you must write on the rental contract "Was not allowed to decline collision insurance." What Visa insurance does not cover is Third Party Insurance. For that you need to contact your auto insurance company and see if it will cover a rental. | ------------------ |
