Anyone having second thoughts?
Posted by Donna on March 11, 2020, 4:41 pm
I'm scheduled to fly from Mexico to Calgary to BC in one week. I'm seriously having second thoughts about going back due to the virus. Is anybody else feeling the same and if so what are you doing about it. If I choose to stay what will happen when my Visa is expired. Which is in about 10 days. Hoping to get some feedback from other travelers going north to Canada and us. | ----------------Re: Anyone having second thoughts?

Donna, I think one must be careful of over reacting. I fly home to BC in two weeks and plan to be mindful of washing my hands often and using an anti- bacterial hand cleaner. Wearing a mask is useful but mostly to remind you to not touch your face. I don’t think the airlines would be flying if they felt it was too high risk. And unless you are in a high risk health situation, you will probably be just fine. Remember, our thoughts can be our downfall. | ----------------Re: Anyone having second thoughts?

Take some Clorox wipes and wipe down everything on the plane that people have touched. We did that and there was a pilot across the isle doing the same. Hand sanitizer is a wise thing and wash your hands whenever you can. Our flight Mar.7 had about a dozen or so empty seats ZLO to LAX, first time I've seen that. I think people are avoiding flying. The airlines will fly as long as there is a profit or if they are ordered to shut down. | ----------------Re: Anyone having second thoughts?

I would consider staying here longer, especially if infection rates in BC accelerate as they have in other places. | ----------------Re: Anyone having second thoughts?

CV has just been declared a pandemic...meaning it will prob get worse. May be more challenging to fly in a few weeks or a month. I am flying this week..but changed my flight & entry destination from LAX to Phoenix. Less recent cases of CV ...& peace of mind. I am immune suppressed & high risk. Follow your gut. | ----------------Re: Anyone having second thoughts?

Curious you'd be that concerned with flying through LAX. Wherever you go wash and keep your hands away from your face. | ----------------Re: Anyone having second thoughts?

Just flew to ZLO yesterday fromLAX on Alaska. They have a special cleaning team that comes in after people disembark and sterilize the heck out of the plane. That with virtually everyone taking care to clean their space with sprays and wipes is positive at least for air travel | ----------------Re: Anyone having second thoughts?

I’m in Seattle and the worst part is everything is cancelled. Social activities have come to a halt. I would love to be back in LM right now. If you have a compromised immune system or respiratory issues, you are at risk. Otherwise worst case scenario, you experience the virus much like the flu. That’s my understanding. The deaths here have been in nursing homes. | ----------------Re: Anyone having second thoughts?

Thank you everybody for your input. I appreciate your comments and views on this matter. Whenever I'm flying i always wipe down seating area, tray, seatbelt, armrest etc...so I know that will help. WestJet assures us extra precautions have be taken. I'm not at risk other than the age. So the flying part will probably be pretty safe at this time I hope. But what will it be like after we're back Will we be able to buy any toilet paper...lol if we're in lockdown for 2 weeks I'd rather be locked down here than there. It's a tough call and I will have to make that decision soon. Thank you again for all of your comments. | ----------------Re: Anyone having second thoughts?

Someone who needs to know for sure should contact immigration in Melaque and ask if there is exceptions at this time and post results!! | ----------------Re: Anyone having second thoughts?

I vote - stay on the beach! If you don't have a compelling reason to travel, I'd recommend staying put. The situation (at least in the US) is so changeable/fluid right now that exploring your options is a great idea. Check with the local authorities about getting your visa extended for a couple months. That way you can either take your flight next week or stay longer. You are in a beautiful location with sunshine, great food and little risk of getting sick. If the situation in Mexico (re Virus) changes for the worse, you can always fly out at that point. I'm in California (Sonoma County) and tourism has ground to a halt. Still a few visitors, but my business has slowed to a crawl while we're all figuring out what to do (other than wash our hands and not touch our faces). If you can get your visa extended - I'd stay put. | ----------------Re: Anyone having second thoughts?

We flew to Calgary today on Westjet. It was just a normal flight. I didn't feel stressed, and the flight attendants were cool and the flight was like any. In the airport here you see a few more people wearing masks. So, now that I'm here I'm feeling a bit better. I think that part of it is not knowing what to expect. Is everyone wearing masks dragging their supply of toilet paper behind them? (No) Is it different? (Not really). However, at home in BC most of our weekly gatherings are being cancelled so I have a feeling we'll be watching a lot of TV and going for walks. We did almost stay, but finally decided that our doctors at home are likely very prepared so, after a LOT of discussion decided to return. I'll report on life in Comox tomorrow, if I get around to it. Good luck all of you still there. It's a tough decision. | ----------------Re: Anyone having second thoughts?

I agree.....it is the airports back home in Canada that is our concern. We will leave tomorrow instead of April 2 and may miss mass confusion in a few weeks....hard to say.

Immigration in Melaque says if your tourist visa expires while you stay here don't wander far from home . Then when you leave the airport immigration will charge you about 500pesisvto give you new visa in order to leave legally!!! All this could change day to day so check in with them. If your Spanish is good enough phone 315 355 1179 otherwise go to office on Jardin corner. | ----------------Re: Anyone having second thoughts?

Maybe some perspective... We flew home yesterday (WJ Manzanillo- Calgary- Comox. I saw one passenger wearing a mask. That's some indication of the lack od panic, and also W J claims that they are taking extra precautions sanitizing seats buckles headrests etc. , and their air circulation has state of the air filters that can deal with viruses. There were also quite a few infants travelling. I would take extra precautions, but don't be stressed . Yet. And we miss our friends in L M already, but glad to be home. | ----------------Re: Anyone having second thoughts?

The last couple of comments have been real time experiences and are much appreciated for the balance they bring. Read someting recently about a worry box. There was news to be very afraid of before corona virus showed up, where is it now? P.S. prevalence-induced concept change. Source | ----------------Re: Anyone having second thoughts?

Yes Daniel the more recent responses from folks who have just traveled within the past couple of days has given me more confidence than I had before. Thank you to those who have kept us informed. So for me at this time I'm going to stick with the plan and that is to leave on Thursday. If however there is government restrictions in place by then we will stay. You pays your money and you takes your chances. Don't be scared be prepared. | ----------------Re: Anyone having second thoughts?

Hi: Home is good. We did go grocery shopping before we complied with the quarantine. The shelves were all stocked. People were going about their days. We belong to an activity club and all indoor events have been cancelled. We have food and a roof over our heads. Life goes on! ♥️🇨🇦😀 | ----------------Re: Life in Comox

So, does being ‘abroad’ mean being in Mexico? Will Canadian borders close to flights from Mexico is the question of the day. | ----------------Re: Life in Comox
Posted by Vicki and Robin on March 14, 2020, 11:58 pm, in reply to "Re: Life in Comox"
According to the Canadian government today, as David said, Canadians should get home as soon as possible. I take that to mean closing the border may be the next step or the airports they will be using will be limited. Please read government postings yourselves and decide your course of action. Don't base your decision on anything but fact. Don't even listen to me! Beware of speculation.
