summary of today's meeting

People have been contacting me asking what happened at the meeting of business and restaurant owners in the jardin this morning. I wasn't there, but I have spoken at length with one of the ambulance board members and with one of the men on the ambulance team who were there. Basically, the representatives there from La Huerta, the president and the head of Proteccion Civil, made suggestions that, unfortunately, they have no way of enforcing and may or may not help. For one, they have asked that small space businesses, like Chop Chops or the tiendas, allow no more than 10 people to enter at one time, and the workers are required to sanitize and wash their hands after every customer. They have asked the restaurants to run at 60% capacity, and also to sanitize tables, chairs, doors, etc., as each customer leaves. As far as Semana Santa, they have not prohibited tour buses from coming into town. Our local businesses say they need that business to be able to feed their families and to keep their workers employed so that they can feed their families. As one of the people who attended the meeting said, the attitude here is, "I may die of the coronavirus, but I'm not going to starve to death." It was suggested at the meeting that each tour bus be stopped and checked, and if anyone has a temperature or other symptoms of the virus, that bus will be turned away. But nobody is in charge of doing that monitoring. Another suggestion was that beach vendors not be allowed to enter the restaurants, that they be provided a space outside to display their wares, and people can come to them. Again, there is no system in place for these new rules to be enforced. Supposedly if we see infractions of the rules, we are to tell the delegado, and he will report to La Huerta officials. There has been an app created that you can get on your phone to update you on the latest information. Look in your app store for Participa La Huerta and follow the links from there. I'm hoping that some of these decisions will change, especially the one about allowing the tour buses to come in. For now, this is the information that came out of the meeting as it was reported to me.
