I am amazed at the quantity of plastic and cardboard generated weekly by our little pueblo. Everything comes in boxes! Also, many of the plastic chairs used at all the beach restaurants and other places are pretty much "disposable", and some meet their final destiny at Las Hormigas. Sometimes one can re-purpose a broken chair for some project. It would be nice if there was an alternative.
Also a reminder on glass, (not accepted at this time by our local recycler), please note that most beer bottles can be returned to the store/deposito. Try to buy things that come in returnable bottles, and ask for a glass of water at restaurants instead of a plastic bottle. All water served comes from the purified water companies. Some restaurants carry Penafiel beverages like mineral water in glass, returnable bottles.
The best we can all do, of course, is reduce our consumption, and try to purchase things in bulk or without excessive packaging. Ultimately these recyclable materials are really trash, and the whole recycling paradigm could fold at any moment with reduced market pricing and closure of third world dumps.
Thanks to everyone who is doing what they can to refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle!
