I spoke with some of my Mexican friends today and we tried to figure out how many people in town had COVID, again cases with symptoms because I think we agree that all countries in the world have had unreported cases because obviously not all people without symptoms get tested. I think we came up with nine people who have had COVID and seemingly the most serious case was our friend the bus driver who took my daugther to school in Agua Caliente the last few years. Thank goodness he recieved solid medical attention because he is well today.
Here's another way to look at this. When I told friends and strangers alike I planned on moving to Mexico, about 50 percent thought it was exciting news in a good way. Maybe about 20 percent thought it was mildly interesting. And probably 30 percent figured I would get shot in cartel violence my first week here or that I would wake up one morning with one of my kindneys in an ice chest. Does the country of Mexico have too much drug violence? Sure. Is this the case in La Manzanilla? Of course not. One could reasonably make an arugment violence is "out of control" in Mexico, but that would not apply to every community in Mexico. And one could also contend Mexico has done a poor job containing the virus, but I'm not sure how one could contend the virus is "out of control" in La Manzanilla.
Again, I realize each person will make a decision for his or her personal situation. I just hope it's a nuanced one and not one based on lots of exclamation points.
