Thanks Rebecca for the nice pic! Anna and her family business, Recicladora Tenacatita, have been awesome partners in this fledging community recycling program. A big clean up usually takes place every 3 - 4 months with the help of students and volunteers. Thanks to donations to La Manzanilla Hermosa we now have additional help to keep the site more tidy and maintained. Thanks to the La Huerta maintenance personnel, the delegado, the principal, students and teachers at the Primaria who keep the project going through all the challenges. Thanks as well to the store owners and local residents who are separating their trash so recycling can continue to happen here, saving some material from the overflowing landfills. Below you can find a list of what is and is not accepted at this time. Sometimes there are changes. There is also signage at the Las Hormigas site to help educate on what is and isn't recyclable. We cannot accept glass, so PLEASE do not leave glass bottles at the site. It is hazardous, and must be disposed of as trash. RECYCLABLE Mixed Plastic: all plastic that contained water, soda, milk, juice, yogurt and other dairy products, and cleaning products, bottles that contained cooking oil are now accepted! Hard Plastic: plastic chairs, crates, and buckets (without cement), plastic bottle caps Cardboard – (No paper or books accepted at this time) Aluminum cans Mixed metal (Chatarra) (SEPARATE from aluminum): tin, bottle caps, pet food cans, etc. Batteries - car, household NON-RECYCLABLE Plastic take-out containers (please try to bring your own when dining out) Brightly colored opaque plastic bottles Red Solo cups used at some events Large “Garrafon” water bottles Plastic bags of any shape or size!! Styrofoam Aluminum foil Egg cartons/crates No paper or books accepted at this time Waxy containers, "Tetrapaks" (Jumex, coconut milk, almond milk, juice boxes) Boxed wine NO GLASS! Hi Lisa, I managed to recycle about 80 glass bottles, I am still cutting, sanding, tumbling...trying to find a use for all this glass. I am also stuffing pep bottles with soft clean plastic...see eco bricks online. If anyone else would like to assist in filling these 2 or 1.5 litre bottles it would be a great way to recycle the plastic and Styrofoam and single use takeout containers. These eco bricks can be used to make furniture and even build a house. I will be attempting to make a shed using these bottles. I am still in need of glass bottles as I am making glass bottle bricks to use in a building that I have obtained. I thank everyone that has been saving their bottles for me and the unknown person who leaves them on my step. I have had a love for bottles forever so this has been a fun adventure. As I don't have email or a phone you can friend me on Facebook Hilda Erickson is my name if you have bottles to be recycled. Thank you P.s. colored bottles are a gift!! | ------------Re: Las Hormigas recycle yard

I have bottleneck sliders if anyone plays the guitar and would to try one out! I have tumbled them so no sanding needed.. If anyone is creative and would like to make bottle top hanging lamp shades or wind chimes I have quite a few bottle tops already cut..you would need to sand. Open to any suggestions to keep the glass out of the landfill.

Heidi, I’d live to try one of your bottle-neck sliders! What a great idea. While I’m there to pick it up, I’d like to look at the glass pieces you have cut out. See you soon! | ------------Re: Las Hormigas recycle yard

Hooray for all the ants! Now that my borrowed golf cart is fixed, I dropped off a whole lot of recycling yesterday and was startled (and impressed) to see how organized and clean Las Hormigas is now. This really is a project to be proud of! | ------------Re: Las Hormigas recycle yard

What a beautiful site! I’m going to get over there soon, too, with some plastics. Thanks to all for your commitment to the environment. | ------------Re: Las Hormigas recycle yard

Lisa, my apologies for not realizing all the work you and your partners have done to get this recycling project up and running. I seemed to have only focused on "no glass allowed". Tunnel vision. | ------------Re: Las Hormigas recycle yard

Thanks to everyone for expressing support for the recycle project of La Manzanilla Hermosa. It's very encouraging! I am amazed at the quantity of plastic and cardboard generated weekly by our little pueblo. Everything comes in boxes! Also, many of the plastic chairs used at all the beach restaurants and other places are pretty much "disposable", and some meet their final destiny at Las Hormigas. Sometimes one can re-purpose a broken chair for some project. It would be nice if there was an alternative. Also a reminder on glass, (not accepted at this time by our local recycler), please note that most beer bottles can be returned to the store/deposito. Try to buy things that come in returnable bottles, and ask for a glass of water at restaurants instead of a plastic bottle. All water served comes from the purified water companies. Some restaurants carry Penafiel beverages like mineral water in glass, returnable bottles. The best we can all do, of course, is reduce our consumption, and try to purchase things in bulk or without excessive packaging. Ultimately these recyclable materials are really trash, and the whole recycling paradigm could fold at any moment with reduced market pricing and closure of third world dumps. Thanks to everyone who is doing what they can to refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle!
