Organic produce

This lovely organic produce (piñas, passion fruits, and arugula) was just picked from la Huerta Escolar by Antonio yesterday. I have it at my house, and it's available by donation. Please let me know if you'd like some. Carol 3151075198

The fruit sold out very quickly. The arugula took a little longer. Antonio says it makes a great pesto. Maybe we can get him to share the recipe. There are more piñas, granada china (also called maracuyá and passion fruit), and even cacahuates!(peanuts, our first crop, I think) - all ready now. Antonio is harvesting as much as possible before the first rain. Sandra Landeros will be near Helping Hands, selling this produce on Sunday at 9:00, when the bookstore is open. She will have the fruits, as well as arugula, basil (the type used in Thai cooking, as well as a limited amount of Italian basil) and maybe some other surprises - all organic. Bring your own bags, and shop while waiting your turn to go into Otra Vez. | ------------Re: Organic produce

Just to let you know Carol..Otra Vez will not be open tomorrow..and if Sandra is coming to set up...please have her do so over near the left side of OV so there are not gatherings in front of the bookstore! | ------------Re: Organic produce

Disculpe el cambio de planes. The produce arrived too late to be sold in conjunction with the bookstore opening; however,it is available now. Sandra will follow up with details and a photo. | ------------Re: Organic produce

So great to see the garden produce. Thanks to Antonio , Carol and everyone else involved with growing, picking and selling. Peter is excited about the peanuts: the first crop!! | ------------Re: Organic produce

All the rest of the peanuts are going to be harvested today! (Hope the weather holds till 5:00) Antonio is going to plant cucumbers in their place, I think. A group is planning to be there to lift them up, turn them over, (they grow kind of like potatoes); then they need to dry out for a day or so, before toasting them. Sandra, who is from Guadalajara, might try boiling them, the way they do there. Amazingly, (to me, anyway) the arugula is still producing tender green leaves. Antonio says it's a perennial, and will just keep regrowing. I've been making pesto to try and up my greens consumption, and as an easy way of preserving them. https://flavorthemoments.com/how-to-make-pesto-sauce/ The sky's the limit with inventing pesto sauces. My latest is using the several kinds of basil available there, along with coconut oil, sesame oil, lime juice, peanuts, etc. It goes well with Thai or Indonesian dishes. So now there are greens, passion fruit, plátanos, pineapples, and peanuts available for sale by donation. Who wants to experiment with the Garden's first organic peanuts? I used to make my pesto in ice cube trays so I could store them in a plastic bag in the freezer, and the ingredients were the classics--basil, parmesan, garlic, olive oil, etc. Now I have used arugula, almonds, different oils, etc. Seems you can't go wrong. When the pesto is made, I spread it out on a cookie sheet and freeze it, and when frozen, I break it into large pieces for storage in the freezer. I can break off however much I need in the dish I'm cooking. Much better than ice cubes! | ------------Re: Organic produce

Thanks for that tip, Jeanne. I’ve been using my ice cube trays for lime juice, etc., but for pesto this would work better. | ------------Re: Organic produce
