I gotta ask.....

......is the heat this year more intense or am I just forgetting or was I just spoiled with the lateness of it’s arrival? I have summered over several times but has been many years ago but normally have left in the mid of July! But this just feels different, more intense and stifling! I do not have air conditioning nor do I like it and can normally just stay cooler by being calmer with fewer activities during the day! When the dog sits by the door outside just begging to come in after 2 minutes outside...well this says it all! Any ideas on this? | ------------Re: I gotta ask.....

Willy and I are here year round as are several others. My one observation is the lack of even a little rain. Those wonderful late afternoon showers. But regrading the heat it’s been this hot for a few years now. June used to be pleasant and then July would hit so did the heat. August and September should be Lou-lous with the heat index. Glad we have a pool and AC. | ------------Re: I gotta ask.....

Scientists report last year as the hottest on recorded history and project this year to be hotter. Last year checking the heat index, which is the perceived temperature arrived at by combining the actual temperature and humidity to indicate the temp that it feels like..... there was a week that went something like, 114, 117, 119, 117, 121, and on, and it finally topped out at 127 on the index scale. But that was in Melaque, and La Manzanilla is always cooler. | ------------Re: I gotta ask.....

Usually I turn on the bedroom A/C to sleep by late May, but so far this year I'm okay with the fan. So, to me, it isn't really hot yet. | ------------Re: I gotta ask.....

I agree with Kimberly...the absence of rain seems to be what is most noticeably different. The cloud covers off and on of late have been a relief though. The heat...well, it feels pretty normal to us for this time of year (our 5th full time living in La Manz). We, the plants and the animals are really looking forward to the rain that will surely come soon, right? No A/C for us (or pool), just the breezes on the hill, tips in the ocean and our ceiling fans. | ------------Re: I gotta ask.....

Hola Stephanie, not that this will make you feel better, but I’ve found that the older I’m getting, just turned 71-yikes!, I’ve become less tolerant of extreme temps, especially heat. When it gets rough, I can get relief from putting an icepack on top of my head, and or my neck, and laying flat out on the bed until my body temp drops. It really works. The thought of the heat there right now gives me the heeby jeebys. And if you put a bowl of ice cubes in front of your fan it really adds to the cooling effect. Hope this helps.

Thank you for all the responses! I think it is the lack of rain as well, or moisture in general. Also I do not remember the winds being as fierce as they have been this late in the season! Although they do cool a bit as well....especially when coming out of the pool for the 10th time in a day! Will try the ice cube technique in front of the fan too and a happy belated birthday Evelyn...I turn 70 in October! | ------------Re: I gotta ask.....

Last night it seemed hotter, probably because you brought up the subject! ;-) I neglected to mention that I've got a freezer full of reusable ice packs of various sizes as well as squirt bottles in the refrigerator and those cooling "snakes" that go around your neck--all devices that fool the body into thinking that it's not so hot. Also, lots of fans. The bedroom A/C is a last resort. | ------------Re: I gotta ask.....

Lynne, what is that "cooling snake" you speak of? Something you make or buy? | ------------Re: I gotta ask.....

Dhyana, I bought my first "cooling snake" from a women's sewing collective when I lived in San Miguel; it was cloth sewn into the shape of a snake with some kind of crystals inside. Since then, Canadian friends from Ontario bring a different variety for my annual Christmas stocking; this kind is some type of flat material that bends. They are both reusable (freeze, thaw, freeze), and both can be made or purchased, but I don't know how to make them or where to buy them. | ------------Re: I gotta ask.....

...moving into a house in West Melaque I noticed the heat and it got to me. Also noted the house was painted dark brown and the roof had no impermeazable. 3 cubetas of white roof sealant and a bucket of white paint made all the difference. The Greeks of 3000 years ago white washed their houses on Corfu for a reason... Mexicans love rich dark colours but that comes with a price. Now the air conditioner runs 3 minutes on and 15 minutes off (@ 28C) before it was 5 minutes on and 5 minutes off if I was lucky... that's gonna make a huge difference in the power bill. | ------------Re: I gotta ask.....

Richard, I am heartened to hear your positive results with only a little white paint and roof coating. A great strategy is to not even let the sun hit your roof or your sun-facing walls. This can be achieved with plantings, trellis, and shade cloth suspended over roofs and a million more strategies that usually are site-specific. | ------------Re: I gotta ask.....

Richard coincident with your building cooling, there is a very interesting article today in sott.net (a known Russian commie dis-information website (even about white paint)). https://www.sott.net/article/437934-New-super-white-paint-reflects-up-to-98-of-the-Suns-heat It seems that scientists have come up with super-white paint that reflects 98% of solar heat. This info was sourced from: https://www.cell.com/joule/fulltext/S2542-4351(20)30179-3 In the S.W. of the United States, many home hardware stores sell impermabilizante that is impregnated with aluminum which when applied leaves the roof with a silver-colored topping which is highly reflective. I have not found this at the Mexican Home Depot website but it is available at the U.S. website. (fyi home despot is the last choice for me). If this was used here instead of dark red coatings the interior temperatures of many buildings would plummet. An established construction/real estate owner in this area advised me that in their work they have found that the most effective way to lower interior temps without air-conditioning is to put 2" of foam on roofs. | ------------Re: I gotta ask.....

http://www.plasticbottlevillage-theline.com/ That foam that you mention is trapped between a metal mesh framework, right? I wonder if this use of plastic bottles could be applied, in order to use up a resource that is already there (instead of having to manufacture new foam) | ------------Re: I gotta ask.....

.... generally, by rule of thumb white paint and roof surface coatings are considered about 90% reflective. Remember there are on a clear day 1050 watts M/2 of radiated energy @ sea level beating down from ol-sol. Adding aluminum might improve things by a few percentage points but is it worth the extra cost? A few years ago I did a large roof in Punta Perula... bright almost blinding when working or the roof... didn't realize how much light energy was reflected until I was looking at Google Earth a year or so ago... the area around the roof is overexposed because the camera on the satellite couldn't handle the reflected light. But we must remember too that much of the heat energy absorbed by a dark object is mostly low frequency IR energy. Over the past few days most of the built up latent heat energy has now dissipated and the noted change is significant. The ceiling went from hot to touch at 2pm to no discernible heat... huge difference. Note: don't know about the paint, I had some, but the roofing compound (impermeazable) was cheapest right here in Melaque at Ferro Pacifico (sp) hardware store... around $650 a bucket. | ------------Re: I gotta ask.....

All of my friends wear masks when we go indoors where there are other people, and we only shop in stores where all of the personnel wear masks and provide hand gel to use upon entering and leaving. But it's true that few others wear them, and they ignore the signs that clearly state each business's regulations, which are never enforced. Pretty soon we won't be able to blame the tour buses for the spread of Covid-19 in our little village. | ------------Re: I gotta ask.....

....something people don't understand about face masks, many think they are wearing excellent protection from others and that they become safe from getting random airborne infectious COVID-19 spores. Your living in a fools paradise if you think you do. The COVID-19 is a viral pathogen; and is so small you need an electron microscope to see it.. a viral spore is 100X smaller than a bacterial pathogen spore. How is it possible that a simple cloth face-mask will filter out viral, COVID-19, the flu or any tiny pathogen? If you can smell cigarette smoke from others while wearing a simple cloth face mask, the tiny pathogen spores will pass through just as easily... they are in orders of multitude many times smaller than even a cigarette smoke particle. Don't depend on a face mask to keep you safe. Face masks help reduce aerosol airborne spray from infected persons when they cough or sneeze. Wash your hands often and whenever you can. Use 60% alcohol based gel often and whenever you have been out touching things. Be careful with money. Stay away from large crowds... do not go to the tiangus for example. Insist on restaurant tables and menus being wiped with antiseptic... always busy waitstaff generally won't unless you ask. Follow the 2 meter rule if not more. _: smiley(""); Just go out less and reduce your risk further. | ------------Re: I gotta ask.....
