There have been a handful cases in our pueblito. of La Manzanilla. Apparently government stats are conducted by "municipio" which does not mean "municipality" as I would use it in the USA, but really "county."
For what it's worth, there have been 22 reported cases for La Huerta, which includes the city of La Huerta, the "county seat" which is 56 km or 58 minutes away. La Huerta, the county, also includes La Manzanilla and some of the towns going up the highway like Agua Caliente and Miguel Hidalgo.
I have known of at least four cases of people who live in La Manzanilla. I can't remember a single day since March without the virus coming up in conversation with people in my social circles.
I know COVID stirs up plenty of passion, but I hope everyone can exchange information in a measured tone. Everyone has the right to believe 22 cases in this far-reaching county is a high number, low number, etc. Yet I hope we can agree upon facts. If another organization apart from the government of Jalisco is conducting research on the number of cases in our county, please share it.
If I were to still live in my hometown of Baton Rouge, I would be quite concerned because of the numbers of cases and fatalities there. In La Manzanilla, I try to keep my distance from others with the exception of my daughter, three employees and Roberto and his family. I wear a mask when I go into Chio's store. I don't wear one to walk down the street or on the beach.
When Mexican families stay in our cabanas, members of different families keep a distance from members of other families. I'm glad they're here because not only do they help keep my business afloat, but they also support our bar, Cafe du Calcetin and plenty of local businesses in town.
We must be doing something right here if there have been 22 cases and no deaths in a county of more than 20 thousand people, right?
I'm always truthful with any prospective guest who asks about the status of the virus here. I will tell them we have had cases and people are required to wear masks in the little stores.
Because of these facts on the ground I continue to believe La Manzanilla is a safe place to be, not simply because I wish to operate a business which does not fail, but also because I wish to do so in a morally correct fashion.
I know some reading this won't come this season because of a fear of travel or a fear of being in Mexico during a pandemic and I respect and support your decision. I hope everyone, however, makes decisions based on facts.
Mateo
