As of January 2021 I will no longer be participating in the recycle project in La Manzanilla. How and if recycling happens here will be up to the Ayuntamiento of La Huerta (Delegacion), along with any other entities that choose to be part of it.
We are now in the process of a complete clean up of the Las Hormigas site. My involvement will end once the last recyclables are picked up by La Recicladora de Tenacatita this week, the remaining garbage hauled off to the landfill, and the lot fumigated again. After the end of the year please direct your questions or complaints about recycling to the Delegado, or to whoever may step up. I want to thank everyone who has kept recycling going for your dedication and hard work.
In September 2017 we created La Manzanilla Hermosa with a group of about 8 people who wanted to investigate ways we might Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, in what for most is a part time winter home. We grew and got some good support for a new recycle project from the related organizations and individuals - esp the primary school administration and staff, some La Huerta officials, (local and in La Huerta), and some enthusiastic volunteers - locals and expats. Unfortunately I personally am not willing or able to continue working on this without more team effort including cooperation and commitment of the local agencies.
One of the first La Manzanilla Hermosa goals was initiating some sort of recycling, as there hadn't been much going on for several years. I am very proud of the pilot program that I was a part of. It's still the only one in the municipality. We have also had great success in launching some other plastic reduction projects and campaigns, and started offering environmental education programs in the schools. You can see some of this on the Facebook page, La Manzanilla Hermosa.
Separation of recyclables is a long term project requiring maintenance, oversight, education, coordination, and funding. This combination has proven especially challenging with the frequent turnover in government and ejido officials. Of course the real answer is to reduce the production and consumption of these products preventing these toxic substances from ever entering our environment and our bodies!
I will continue my lifelong habits of limiting my personal consumption, composting, habitat gardening, and educating whoever may be interested in learning more from nature, our greatest teacher. In the future I may want to get involved in community green waste composting, or another plastic reduction project.
Thanks again!
