Looking for some financial help for Helping Hands bookstore that has been helping the pueblo since 2004
We have weathered the 2008 financial crisis, the hit of online reading but now...our coffers are dwindling due to closures and fewer customers!
So as we enter into our 17th year, I am asking for donations so that we may continue with our scholarship program with La Catalina and helping various other groups and individuals in need!
I always keep a certain amount in a safety reserve annually just in case, but count on the winter months to bring those coffers up! Last years fast departures by many took a big hit on us and this year...well, we all know what is happening, right?
I pay the rent twice a year in good faith so that it is not a monthly ordeal and our landlord has been fair and knows we are being hit hard so we have had no increases!
And our scholarships actually reduced a bit as three former recipients dropped out but I hear one is now coming back, ojala! We added a new one as well, but where we normally fund 10 we are now at 7 but it does add up and many are now in college which is more expensive! I truly wanted to take on more, however, held back due to financial insecurities over this year we find ourselves in!
So...if anyone is interested I find the easiest way to donate is through Western Union and have used it for both Canadians and Americans and funds can be picked up right here in town, making it easier and safer for us to pick up!
As an aside, Otra Vez is holding it’s own due to a higher degree of local customers! Also, profits there are in a separate account for the reconstruction of a small community building on Playa Blanca! To those here now, a lovely neighbor has helped us out by saving costs on demolishing and building a new wall! But this is a dream for later as we have time and donated manpower, women too!
So, if you have questions, please contact me either here or directly, swunner@earthlink.net or phone 315-351-7251.
Thank you in advance!
