The La Manzanilla recycle site will be moving!
The ejido has generously offered a 20m x 30m lot near La Parcela Escolar (school garden) to set up a new site for La Manzanilla's recycling program. Currently we are the only area recycle proyect in the municipality of La Huerta.
The lot was cleared in September as a first step to transferring recycling from the Las Hormigas site near the Primary School. Heavy equipment and operator were donated by the La Huerta Ayuntamiento. A large old Higuera tree will provide shade. Some helpful goats also pitched in.
School has been shuttered since March and through the regular school summer holiday due to Covid 19. Plans are for a smaller recycle/environmental education program to continue at the school when back in session as resources and interest permit.
More work is needed to make the new town site operational - fencing with a vehicle access gate, additional leveling and bringing in road base, setting up containers and signage.
Future goals include creating a green waste processing area in the lot to convert yard waste and tree trimmings into valuable mulch and/or compost.
Thanks to everyone who supports recycling in La Manzanilla!

Great to hear about the move! With all the new animal recycling in place perhaps folks will get the idea that recycling is the cool thing to do!
Also nice to free up,that lot for what it was originally going to be...low cost housing for teachers!
Great deal all the way around!

Welcome back to all the snowbirds who have decided to migrate south for the winter...and who love to RECYCLE!! Thanks for asking!
Please know that a small group of volunteers are doing our best to make this pilot project viable and sustainable. Unfortunately, the system takes coordination from several entities, and is not perfect - sometimes pick up is delayed, and the site gets messy, like it is now. Also, our trusty garbage workers usually dump the recyclables instead of putting them in the containers. As soon as possible after the next pick up there will be a clean up like we usually pay for every couple of months.
Here's an update on the new site, and info on where and what can be recycled locally. (see LIST below)
The new site is on land offered by the ejido, down a few lots from La Parcela Escolar (school garden). The lot was cleared in September as a first step. Due to the increase in volume of materials coming in through curbside pickup, local recycling is transforming from what started as a small, environmental education school project spearheaded by La Manzanilla Hermosa, to part of the solid waste management plan of the municipality of La Huerta,
Once the formal agreement has been signed by the entities involved, more work will be needed to make the new municipal town site operational - fencing with a vehicle access gate, additional leveling and bringing in road base, setting up containers and signage. Of course all this takes time and funding.
Possible future goals could include creating a green waste processing area in the lot to convert yard waste and tree trimmings into valuable mulch and/or compost.
Thanks to everyone who supports recycling in La Manzanilla!
HOW TO RECYCLE
If you would like to participate in curbside pick up, please put recyclable materials in a reusable container next to your trash can. Please do not use a plastic bag, which is not recyclable, makes extra work and adds to landfill waste. La Manzanilla has a recycling truck that picks up curbside. Schedule is fluid!
OR
Take recyclables directly to "Las Hormigas" behind the Primary School on Playa Dorado, and separate into the wire containers. PLEASE DO NOT JUST LEAVE PLASTIC BAGS WITH MIXED RECYCLABLES.
***A NOTE ON GLASS*** While our recycler does not accept ANY glass, we hear that the recycle center outside Melaque (on Highway 200 past Jaluco and across from Pemex) is now accepting glass. Possibly someone with a vehicle might coordinate to take a load there. Check first.
CURRENT LIST OF RECYCLABLE/NON-RECYCLABLE
Mixed Plastic: all plastic that contained water, soda, milk, juice, or cleaning products
Hard Plastic: plastic chairs, crates, and buckets, plastic bottle caps

AS ALWAYS, RECYCLING IS THE LAST RESORT OF THE R'S SO PLEASE DO WHAT YOU CAN TO:
REFUSE REDUCE REUSE REPURPOSE RECYCLE

Thanks, Lisa, what a great lot of information here. It’s good to know we can recycle glass at the depot past Jaluco. Has anyone taken their glass there?
