Can you imagine being blind and living without a few basic items like a convenient inside source of water; a working bathroom or shower; or a 'kitchen' with only a stove and midget refrigerator. Living with the mud from last August's devastating storm and flood still caked on your floor because you can't see to clean it.
And somehow, we don't know how as we scratch our heads in disbelief, Everardo made his 'cottage' and these conditions work for him. Unbelievably he survived these two years of blindness in good shape as he also managed to maintain his undaunted spirit.
Perhaps it is a good memory or photographic mind that allowed Everardo to keep track of and care for his few belongings, important papers, meds and tools. Everardo washed somehow and kept track of dusty pants and shirts. These were hung precariously toppled and stacked on each other on a wrapped wire line. He kept his radio and fans covered, 'protected' from the rusting sea air.
For food, Eve boiled beans and lentils. These he ate, accompanied with tortillas, standing up at his table-stand by the stove. Then using walls and furniture by feel to guide him, he would inch himself to a Mexican sink, outside in his back yard, to wash his two dishes and sometimes, pan.
