Spanish/English InterCambio

For the past few months a friendly group has been gathering on Wednesday nights from 7 pm - 9 pm upstairs in the spacious, open palapa at Casa Luz to practice our language skills, and make connections. The evening starts by listening to a podcast, either from DuoLingo, or lately from How to Spanish (YouTube). We then break into smaller groups to discuss the podcast, or just chat about what comes up. Very casual and fun! We often close with an optional circle folkloric dance from around the world. English learners and Spanish learners are all welcome to drop in. There is also a WhatsApp group you can join if interested. Please contact Carol Lopez to join carollopezart@gmail.com Here is a taste of what we will be listening to this week:

I really enjoyed the Spanish/English Wednesday night group. It inspired me to study Spanish more thoroughly and to overcome my reluctance to speak it. I hope it’s still going in the Fall when I return. | -----------------------Re: Spanish/English InterCambio

We spent our last session discussing the subtleties of Mexican adverbs such as: "a lo loco" o "con locura" (in English, just any old way, free style, without thinking about it) "de jalón" (all at once, like how you would take a bitter medicine) "al aventón" (to get a ride with someone... - Or to do something in a hurry, not thoroughly..) I mentioned the saying in English, “I just gave it a lick and a promise” which means I cleaned the room, but barely...it was interesting that many English speaking people had never heard this one!) Here are some others you can look up in your translator: "arrastras" "a regañadientes" "respondón" "con pinzas" o "con pincitas" "llevarse del chongo" "de la patada" "con las patas" "sin ton ni son" It was really fun, hearing how our neighbors, Alicia, Sandra, Lorena, and Coco use these colorful expressions in their everyday life. The next best thing to total immersion! | -----------------------Re: Spanish/English InterCambio

My (American) mother, knowing how much I hated to clean to her strict specifications, would always say, "Well then, just give it a lick and a promise." I thought that everybody's mother said that. ;-) | -----------------------
