Melaque Mask Mandate

About every six weeks I take the 1:30 bus to Melaque to take advantage of Farmacia Similares' 25% discount and do all the shopping that I can't do in La Manz. Today, I was rearranging packages and having a smoke on a bench in the Jardin when two men came up and offered me a free mask, stating that wearing one was now mandatory in all public places, both indoors and outdoors. I pointed to the mask that was hanging from my wrist like a bracelet, they agreed that I could finish my cigarette before putting it back on since I was sitting nowhere near anywhere else. Then, on the 3:00 bus back, a woman tried to board at El Ranchito without a mask and the driver wouldn't let her. Never in my almost 20 years in Mexico have I witnessed this level of enforcement or compliance. I'm so flabbergasted that I need to take a nap! | -----------------------Re: Melaque Mask Mandate

.... right now most if not all walk in businesses such as the bodega require a mask to enter, they are also taking your temperature. Chain stores such as Walmart, Farmacia Guadalajara both have someone at the door to make sure you wear a mask. The jardine in Melaque is now taped off... no one can use it, at least for now. There is no blanket requirement to use a mask outdoors, but if you haven't already had COVID or been fully vaxxed, right now you'd be crazy to go outside without one. Similares with it's open air front has not been enforcing their mask requirement...they have just been enforcing a distancing metric with tape of 1.5m but that could change quickly. Do not enter a busy store without a mask... remember some folks can get COVID and be asymptomatic, and this virus, the Delta variant, is considered by the CDC (USA) to be the most virulent respiratory pathogen they have ever seen. I have been pleading with unvaxxed folks I know to go and get their shots... getting COVID is a rough 10 day ride, I know because I got COVID last August, and got sick, but not deathly sick, but darn sick.. and no, some don't make it. But being Vaxxed. even with the less effective Chinese SinoVac vaxxine they are using now is better than nothing. The few(er) people who do get COVID after being vaxxed and have antibodies, don't tend to get really sick or wind up in hospital... that appears to be the goal now. Richard

The Melaque Jardin was not roped off yesterday or I would not have sat down on a bench. Nevertheless, these new rules must apply to MPIO Cihuatlan and/or the state of Colima because I see no evidence of a new mandate in MPIO La Huerta. Here, I guess that people must rely on their common sense. | -----------------------Re: Melaque Mask Mandate

Good report Rick, although very sad to know of folks that still refuse to vaccinate! Went and ran some chores today and everywhere I went, 3 stores, all were masked and when asked if they were vaccinated, they were! So that is good news! The Jardins here in LM are now taped off as well! Just saying! | -----------------------Re: Melaque Mask Mandate

Actually, my post was NOT about Covid; it was about the level of compliance and enforcement never before witnessed in Mexico. For example, when I lived in San Miguel, the state of Guanajuato passed a No Smoking ordinance. Inspectors would call ahead to bars and restaurants to tell the owners to put all the ashtrays away; then, as soon as the "inspection" was completed, they would put them back down again. Of course the pandemic is different, and it is about time that the government takes it seriously. I just don't want to live in another Big Brother Nanny State, so I hope that everyone follows the guidelines so that we can go back to "normal" once the pandemic is over. | ----------------------- |
