Facilitator: Lynne Willard, La Manzanilla full-time resident, says:
I’ve been working in the “World of Words” my entire adult life and will gladly send you my CV, as well as the first few chapters of my own memoir, if you express interest in the workshop. As a journalist and feature writer in the States, I wrote countless articles and essays; more recently, my work was published in International Living Magazine and Chicken Soup for the Soul. Currently, I specialize in editing translations from other languages to English, ESL documents (written by non-native English speakers), and memoir—a category that fell into my lap when friends like Julie Catton began to recommend me, and then the word-of-mouth culture took over. I have now edited so many memoirs and done so much research that I feel prepared to help any other woman who wants to write about a slice of her own life story.
The workshop is designed to be fun, interactive, and non-judgmental. Although some participants might want to write an autobiography—her entire life story—we will focus on completing either a prologue or the first chapter of whichever book you want to write, as well as an outline of successive chapters. Normally, a memoir covers a shorter time frame, from a few memorable days to a period of many years; its length can be anywhere from 19,000 to 70,000 words. Some women will only want to write a story for herself and/or her children; for those who want to publish, I will give you a complete guide to the process at the conclusion of the workshop. You would be under no pressure whatsoever to hire me as your editor!
If you are interested in attending, please contact me at lfwedit@gmail.com no later than February 1. We will communicate via email so that I can send everyone documents as attachments prior to the workshop. I will also notify you if the workshop is canceled (due to a lack of participants), if the workshop is full, or if enough women have signed up that a second workshop is warranted the following week.
