local covid
Posted by Mike Mundell on January 11, 2022, 1:55 pm
Hello all My wife and I have planned to spend the whole month of February in La Manz. We are both healthy, triple-vaxed 70+ year-olds. At this point, Omicron is surging tremendously locally (Santa Rosa, CA). We are trying to make up our minds whether to come or not- everything is cancellable. We desperately want to come, but don't want to be tied down with fear of infection. If some of you could be so kind as to share your sense of risk and how life goes with you these days w/r/t covid, and what resources are available in case of infection, it would help us make a decision. Many thanks for any help Mike and Ellen Mundell | -------------------Re: local covid

no big surprise..... it is so much better than covid-19, at least you probably will not die from it | -------------------Re: local covid

Mike, there have been several larger groups gathering in the past week for special occasions and one I know has provided us with multiple cases and the lab in melaque has confirmed many expats have tested positive for omi! Some classes have been canceled and other group gatherings to fund various causes here have been delayed til this blows over! Several meetings I attend have been canceled! We also just had huge crowds here over the holidays with many more traveling in the own cars rather than take buses which may have helped not spread this thing so fast! Have not talked with any non vaxed folks about how they are doing and seems those with mild symptoms were all double vaxed and had had their boosters! I have heard from various local friends that they are nervous as some have not gotten their second vax yet as they got caught in the age thing and came down with Covid during the summer and were unable to get the second dose! Still waiting! Good news is that the booster was initiated today for those permanent residents over 60! Hope that helps clarify what is happening here right now! | -------------------I beg to differ...

"the lab in melaque has confirmed many expats have tested positive for omi!" That is false, tested for Omni as they said there is no distinction in testing between the two, onmi, or 19. My Source, face to face conversation..at Bennies. Lets get our facts straight... | -------------------Re: I beg to differ...

Deano, in the interest of getting facts straight, there have been quite a few variants of Covid-19--the two most recent nasty ones being the Delta variant and the Omicron variant. They are therefore both "19," whether or not a lab test can determine the difference. | -------------------Re: I beg to differ...

If you read the posts from the last few days you will see that there is enough covid to cancel several of the community’s major fundraising events. The state of Jalisco has new restrictions going into effect on Friday due to the high case counts. The restrictions probably won’t affect us much here in our small town but are another sign of Covid’s prevalence here. Medical resources in town are very very limited and don’t always follow main stream medical standards. Many locals and foreigners choose to seek all of their medical care outside of the community. Covid testing is not available here, but in Melaque, a 20-30 min cab ride away. My understanding is that this wave is going to last through February. I would advise any friends of mine to visit a different time. Most cases I have heard of have been mild, but not all (I haven’t personally heard about unvaxxed cases yet).

There is good medical care here in this village- we have very good doctors. IMO there is no difference between here and el Norte: the omicron variant is everywhere now. Where would I rather be? Here of course. You can be as safe or maybe safer here in La Manzanilla, where everything is in the open air with a sea breeze. | -------------------Re: local covid

I would agree if you are already here it's probably not that much different but would you want to add traveling to the mix? | -------------------Re: local covid

Vax pass was not required from LAX in early Dec, only mask. Don't know about now | -------------------Re: local covid

Am 75, walk 4 miles a day, eat well, etc.and triple vaxed. Am a bit ambivalent about the new rash of covid. Slightly more concerned about access to care if I get big time sick but also aware of how rampant omicron is in Florida where we live.. Am planning to be careful, mask in public and stay away from restaurants | -------------------Re: local covid

Observation. Seems extranjeros are carrying the bulk of infections. Also seems we were clean before high season flights began arriving. This is very strange. Vax pass is required to fly...no? Corona 229E. Google it. Where have the immunity systems gone? Don't you people eat right? | -------------------Re: local covid

Francisco...I humbly beg to differ to you. Many very healthy people who eat 'right' and exercise still come down with COVID. Please look up on Google how many world-class athletes have come down with the virus. Of course, living well and eating well can be factors affecting a more positive recovery. I hope you are one of those folks living a positive and healthy lifestyle, but I implore you to take all necessary precautions anyway. Happy New Year | -------------------Re: local covid

Francisco, I have two comments to make. 1. I know a number of non-Mexicans have, indeed, contracted covid; I also know of many Mexicans who have as well. 2. It seems you may be forgetting the bus-loads of people who poured into La Manz over the holiday. Canadians must be double-vaxxed in order to board an airplane (don't know about USians) and I seriously doubt there's any such requirement for boarding a bus in Mexico. I implore you to not be too hasty in levelling blame. | -------------------Re: local covid

Gracias Judith. I take all precautions. Jo Anna. Not being hasty at all. My observations go back almost 2 years. We were all frightened in the beginning. The extranjeros left in a mad rush. We watched the square have local events. Boca had a few parties. Thousands came in by bus in 2020 and early 2021. We held our breath...but nothing. We did not have our big outbreak until May-June 2021 when the first trickle of planes came from the US. Hit us hard. Many died. The recent Onicron burst began long before the busses showed up for the holidays. Just putting 2 and 2 together. And it does not equal 5. I wish everyone a safe visit in our country. Cuidado | -------------------Re: local covid

You dont have to be vaxxed to fly from the US into Mexico, you have to have an antigen test to fly back to US. Also, last May and June was not a time of many from the North arriving, I know because i was here then, and most had left who came for the winter | -------------------Re: local covid

Also, to be more specific, the majority of snowbirds and tourists during the high season are from Canada, where they have to be fully vaccinated in order to leave the country. With a few exceptions, most of the full-time foreign residents are citizens of the United States, which is why we call the low season "The American Summer." I can't imagine that more than a handful of people from either country would arrive in May or June. | -------------------Re: local covid

Not sure why this has disintegrated into a blame game. | -------------------Re: local covid

I think that some people are just trying to get facts straight. Apparently some locals think that Americans brought Covid in May and June, whereas many foreigners trace the influx to tour busses. I see this as a discussion, rather than an argument. | -------------------Re: local covid

A discussion with no basis in reality…no facts to discuss. It’s conjecture… | -------------------Re: local covid

You are absolutely right. Those of us who were here in May and June of last year are exchanging opinions based on our own observations. I see nothing wrong with that, as long as no one gets nasty or attacks anyone else. For example, my fully vaccinated Mexican landlady, with underlying health conditions, contracted Covid last June and was given a one percent chance of survival. (She finally came home in December.) By her own admssion, she carelessly interacted with unvaccinated hospedaje guests from Guadalajara, without wearing a mask; her only contact with a foreigner was me, who lives full-time on the property. Also, I witnessed no new arrivals from the North during that period. I'm not engaging in a "blame game," just stating the reasons why I agree with Bonnie. | -------------------Re: local covid

2021 was a different year. Tho not high season numbers, there were quite a few that, after their vaccinations were itching to travel in May and June. Witnessed a few claiming they did not need masks because they were jabbed, did not spread it, and were immune. There was certainly enough that the moderator of this page commented and asked them to be more careful. But to no avail. The damage was done. I am always here and have never seen an outbreak caused by busses. It is their country however, and they are free to travel here. Omicron has come from the north. There can be no denying it. Vaxxed or not, everyone spreads it, everyone catches it. We are happy to take your money, but it is a high price to pay at times.

I recently read that studies are showing covid thrives in high humidity but does not seem to be affected by climate temperatures. I did not save the source… | -------------------
