Yes... if you do not use your banamex card or show any activity in your account, they will close it down. I think there is a time frame of 6 months. What we do is use our banamex atm card once a month - make a small purchase of a minimal amount, and that shows activity, and the account stays active! Yes, your Banamex ATM card does work in Canada.

Thanks for answering this Fran..I thought I was the only one that got one of these letters. I have been unsuccessfully trying to reach the numbers they gave me to call..it does not work somehow....and my account is actually active because my phone bill and CFE bills come ut of there every month, as well as my cel ...???? it is so weird. I called the bank in Melaque and got the "grumpy" lady who just said I had to call the numeros on the letter....Arghh!!! sometimes things are just too strange.... the 800 number says "invalid number" and the number to cal from DF just keeps ringing and ringing and then says my signal is too weak and hangs up. After seeing your post I went to Banamex to check on my account. Two year ago they told me I had to keep 3600 in my account or they would charge me monthly. I did that and since the post office in Melaque changed post masters I have not received any statements.
Today I was told I had no money in my account and if I wanted to keep it open I had to keep 5000 in the account. I told them I needed to think about it. I never used t h e account except to transfer money for projects.
BANAMEX is a scam!!!!!!!

I have had a Banamex account for at least 15 years and although their customer service set up is weak I have never had an issue with my account. They do pay my CFE and car insurance bills with no glitches.
I do not use my ATM for 6-7 months a year when I am away and have never had them try to close my account. I do not use my ATM much when I am there in the winter because it is easier doing money business with Intercam.
Having said that I would not be surprised by anything that they might do with your account.
I would suggest either close your account and open one with Intercam and/or keep more pesos in your Banamex account so they have no reason to close it.
As far as the letter you received, I did not get one because I get my bank info sent to my email monthly.
Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your input on this I too have had my Banamex acct for over 15 yrs, always keept my balance above what was necessary, have had them pay all my bill out of my account, and never have had any problems...also receive my statements online...when I am in Canada of course I do not use the account, but there are still bills coming out monthly so the account is definitely not dormant. I have never had a letter like this before, and did not even know there was such a thing. I did in fact manage to contact them and fill out a "questionaire: over the phone...they asked me tons of questions ...about my income, how i used my account, if I ever got transfers into the account, if I ever sent money out of the account, if I ever did any gambling with money from the account...it was long, involved, and asked many very personal questions. The lady was very nice, but I felt it was a very invasive questionaire and am seriously considering changing to intercam when I get there just because of this nature of this inquiry. Glad noone else seems to have got one of these letters and also it is good that the story inspired a couple of people to check on their accounts and find out some things they did not know....so now the story is hopefully over. What a very invasive and strange occurrence, glad to see it worked out for you.
One thing to consider is the possibility that someone mentioned your name to Banamex about maybe conducting business in Mexico, just a thought.
