those bags again!

Sharing a photo of my little collection of reusable bags. They all are as big as the single use bags, but fold up into a pouch that is easy to carry, so you always have one with you (in a purse or whatever) The olive green one was a gift from Gwen, of Gwen and Ted. Still going strong! I bought the black one at Winners years ago - they don't sell them any more (Are they Losers now?) The pink one is a Chico bag, designed in Chico, California. Bring some of these bags down to La Manzanilla, OK? They will definitely find a good home. Reminder: the single use bags won't be given out with every little purchase anymore. So come prepared. | -----------------Re: those bags again!

Good! Wait till you see Linda H's idea for T-shirt bags. I'm hoping she will post it. Thanks, Lisa, for asking her to contact me. That will be a fun project.

The law prohibiting single use bags will not be fully implemented until Jan 2020. So don't be surprised to see them still in use now. But the sooner individuals can embrace the change, the better! Gifting great reusable bags to your friends in La Manzanilla is a grand idea. | -----------------Re: those bags again!

Yes, I was in one grocery yesterday, and everything was still being packaged in bags (not the usual ones with handles, but small clear ones) - not even all that convenient to carry. It was just a package of something stuffed into another bag. Oh well, it's about half the plastic being consumed, I guess. Poco a poco... | -----------------Re: those bags again!

I'm currently known as the NO-BAG lady here in the Berkshires, the one who refuses the bag and proceeds to drop half of my newly purchased items on my way out of store! I'm liking your suggestions Carol! | -----------------Re: those bags again!

In Melaque about 4 doors down from the Super Hawaii store is the cristaleria. They sell multi-use bags of different sizes and shapes. Maybe one of the stores in La Manzanilla offers something similar. Ya tengo mi bolsa! | -----------------Re: those bags again!

Yes, Monte, I’d like to support them, too. I bought one of their knotted bags; only problem was that the holes in it were too big - small limes, etc. fell right through.

What do you use to line your kitchen waste basket, to contain the slop that will be then thrown in the street collection bin? | -----------------Re: those bags again!

If all the recyclables are taken to the recycling place...and there is a pail (with a lid) for all the food waste..which can be saved for a few days and taken to anywhere there are chickens (they will eat it all) then there should not be much slop at all in the garbage...probably just glass and the odd plastic that cannot be recycled at this point. The guys in the truck come around and buy all metal, aluminium, and cans so save a bag for them (I just give it to them when they pass,,,or give it to some of the people who are always checking the garbage cans to find these items so they can sell them Also if any container that has food in it...even butter wrappers etc. is rinsed clean before going in the garbage you will never have a problem with dogs dumping the pail. Using these principles my garbage is never dumped over (even tho my neighbors is all over the street every single morning) and I have very very little in my pail when those wonderful men come to collect it. there is always more one can do to lessen the garbage....I am so glad everyone is talking about this and giving suggestions. Thanks everyone. Linda Mandala | -----------------Re: those bags again!

I use the same technique, except I empty my food waste pail at a pig slop bucket at Aborrotes Fanny. There might be one convenient for you. A couple of pig farmers collect the buckets daily from stores, restaurants, and homes that request them. Pigs don't eat oranges (but do eat limes), and pork is not a good idea for them. I line my kitchen and bathroom garbage cans with a plastic bag, and empty the contents into our garbage can. I clean the bag a couple of times a year. The bags last more than a year. The garbage truck workers usually empty garbage bags into the truck, because the truck can handle more volume without them. So it is a true waste to send garbage to the landfill in bags! Our garbage can is small and has a lid. The contents do not contain much that the dogs want anyway. | -----------------Re: those bags again!

Thanks for all these ideas re reducing waste, all! Here's another one. I have quite a big fridge with freezer above. I store my compostables there, till I have enough to add to the compost, or give to chicken or pig farmers. I also just use buckets and pails. (seldom plastic bags) When the compostables are stored in the fridge or freezer, there are no fruit flies or bad smells, and having the freezer full is actually a way to use less electricity. Let's keep sharing ideas!

Thanks for your ideas for food waste! I canʻt get my head around poopy toilet paper though, thrown loose in bins and flying around the workers at the trucks | -----------------Re: those bags again!

The basureros are true heroes, in my opinion, and deserve great tips for their service (given to the driver, who manages the distribution). The pay they receive from La Huerta is minimal, and they rely on tips. Especially disgusting wastes could be packaged in small bags, which they won't need to open to save space in the truck. It is the large hefty bags that they open and empty. To quote Hermit the Frog, "It Ain't Easy Being Green!" | -----------------Re: those bags again!

Interesting that every one is trying to figure out what they're going to use to replace the "single use " bags that they're reusing. | -----------------Re: those bags again!

Currently, most people seldom reuse "single use" bags or other single use plastic products. The planet is drowning in plastic, and the overuse of fossil fuels (from which plastics are derived) threatens us, and young people in particular. So whatever each person can do, the better. Reduce, reduce, reduce. And then reuse, reuse, reuse. And then recycle, recycle, recycle. Waste reduction is a powerful tool, and one of the most powerful tools in our tool kit. It isn't rocket science. It is common sense. It does require that people take personal responsibility for their wastes. Corporations will definitely generate as much waste as people are willing to consume. Individuals have the power to say, "Hell no". Or not. It is my opinion that people should care if they have children or grandchildren, or simply have a conscience for the future. | -----------------Re: those bags again!

Oh my Vickie, I didn't mean at all to challenge the concept. I recycle everything, always carry my own shopping bags, compost, and rewash plastic bags that I do aquire to reuse. It just struck me as odd. I apologize if I offended anyone, it wasn't intended. Lyn | -----------------Re: those bags again!

Lyn, speaking for myself, I did not hear any criticism in your post. Only a thoughtful Why? If I'm going to place the Refuse/Reduce game, I want to challenge all my entitled plastic consumption habits. A big part of the world does not use toilet paper, never mind the plastic bags to dispose of it. Can we learn something from them, maybe adapt their hygiene habits in some way? | -----------------Re: those bags again!

I was talking to someone last year who had managed a very high end eco resort in South Asia, no plastics of any kind were permitted, they had the same toilet paper situation we do and lined the waste baskets with big banana leaves which got dumped and replaced everytime the basura was emptied. Seemed like a nifty solution? | -----------------Re: those bags again!

And why not use the leaves instead of paper? | ----------------- |
