Swimming?

The beach is sooooo tempting and people are having a great time in the water but the sewage keeps leaking on either end of town and has done for ages. Does anyone test the water for e.coli etc.? I'm jonesing for the sea but hesitant to swim in a toilet. Help! Words of wisdom/experience/consolation appreciated. | -----------------Re: Swimming?

Hola, Lise. No consolation here. Our beach is probably contaminated but no one is testing. Perhaps Tenacatita is safer or okay as it is closer to the open ocean and probably flushed out. Swimming is nice there. Have lunch there or $pend your money on the way. Cruz | -----------------Re: Swimming?

I have friends who swim several times a week. For me, not so much. I learned a decade ago how sick I can get from swimming in contaminated water in Zihuatanejo. Cruz has a good suggestion. Rojo | -----------------Re: Swimming?

Swimming in the near shore ocean when raw sewage is flowing into it can be very unhealthy and dangerous for certain people, very young, older or compromised immunity systems. E.coli is only one of many pathogens found in untreated sewage. There are many others, Viruses: Norwalk, Hep A and Polimyelitis and more, Bacteria: E.coli, Salmonellosis, Shigellosis and more, Parasites: Cryptosporidium and Giardia | -----------------Re: Swimming?

Thank Danko for a taste of reality. It all becomes clear when I remove my head from the sand. | -----------------Re: Swimming?

The swimming has been great. Go out thirty yards or so and the water is clear. The ocean is a great cleanser and the croc lagoon is no longer dumping into the ocean. Enjoy life. | -----------------Re: Swimming?

Thanks, all, for weighing in. I'm still of two minds, but at least now I have names for the tiny angel and devil whispering in my ears! | -----------------Re: Swimming?

Is the contamination all year around or just seasonal? | -----------------Re: Swimming?

The sewage contamination of the beach is neither continuous or seasonal, but can happen whenever heavy rains cause sewer overflow on the streets or require releasing water from the lagoon. One can speculate all they want about the degree or type of contamination present, but at this time the amount of contaminated water water leaching into the sea is visually minimal. At this present time there are many people swimming at the beach. | -----------------Re: Swimming?

Im not trying to troll here, but seriously? It looks visually ok and people are swimming is the standard? After direct dumping of raw human sewage? Really? Amoebic dysentery can kill you. Just saying. | -----------------Re: Swimming?

I'm with you on this Scott...What we need is WATER TESTING. It is the only way to know how bad the contamination really is...visual just is not going to tell us....sure it looks great ..,but it is pretty hard to visually inspect a bacteria .....just sayin' Linda Mandala | -----------------Re: Swimming?

I would love to take my grandkids back to La Man in the future. However, as the beach is so important to us, I am hesitant to return until water sampling tests are able to be done on somewhat of a regular basis. I am sure the fix to the problem will take some years ( new piping - pumps etc ) and thank those that are working towards this goal.---- Wonder if water testing is something local government does ? | -----------------Re: Swimming?

Ocean contamination testing is tricky and not always conclusive. This article explains: http://mit.whoi.edu/page.do?pid=35555&tid=1423&cid=47886 I'd think if bacterial levels were consistently very high, we'd have an obvious number of sick people. For otherwise healthy people, serious infection seems a long shot unless water is visibly contaminated or conditions favor increased sewage outflow. | -----------------Re: Swimming?

I went in yesterday and again this morning, Just got her 2 days ago, the overflow was halted in the Jardine this morn, I'm sitting at the closed for the day Valentina's and the "ditch" is non existent today apparently it was here Monday, I am a Realtor from Vancouver Island and deal with water samples often, specifically ecoli counts, testing needs to be very precise but that's drinking water, no idea regarding the ocean, all seems well, I'll post more in a couple days if I'm still upright. | -----------------Re: Swimming?

Drove over the spewing water down by the crocs this morning...it is still pouring out and smells just like a sewer...I have to hold my breath when I go by there because the odor is just horrible. looks the same today as other days. I do not know how the crocs are handling it.... Linda Mandala | -----------------Re: Swimming?

Ive been swimming here close to the lagoon, and so far I feel fine. In fact, maybe a little better than usual, but that's due to the La Manzanilla Effect. | -----------------
