In Idaho and all over farming country (yes, Mx also) bees are used to polinate crops. Here they are known as leaf cutter bees and their houses are scattered all over the country side. They are smaller and will definately kick your butt if you disturb their "nest".
Since they don't make honey they do not have the traditional hive structure. For them home is a punky piece of 6x6 lumber drilled and cross drilled for them to use as a nest. several of these are stacked into large plywood boxes raised off the ground a ways.
