Those stores are so not La Manzanilla and drain money out of the town. I wish there was a town ordinance that says roll up doors are mandatory, that they have to blend in. I will boycott. | -------------------Re: Oxxo

I have been travelling to Mexico for 35 years and have always preferred the little villages with real people and real food. Oxxo has absolutley nothing that will take my business away from the other great little tiendas and depositos ( so many wonderful smiling faces and proud owners ) ..... | -------------------Re: Oxxo

One thing for sure if La Manzanilla doesn't come up with some guidelines this quaint little town will become a duplicate of PV. Do we even have a town council? I see the problem as two fold, one the money going out of town and the other the design of the store. Don't they have something that fits into the existing style of the town? | -------------------Re: Oxxo
Posted by Lynne on May 20, 2019, 10:53 am, in reply to "Re: Oxxo"
Perhaps La Manzanilla was chosen as a location due to the influx of Four Seasons workers, who tend to buy Oxxo-type offerings. (I've never done a scientific survey, but I've been behind them in line at the closest tienda to my home; beer and junk food are the primary purchases.) At least the Starbucks in San Miguel, which opened on the historic jardin despite massive protests, designed its franchise to conform to the colonial architecture. Still, only tourists patronized it. | -------------------Re: Oxxo

Asi que todos ustedes, los turistas, vienen aqui y quieren cambiar nuestro pais. Si hay un problema, quizas puedas regresar a tu propio pais. Esto creara los trabajos que necisitamos. El boicot no hara nada, the store is for us.

"So all of you, the tourists, come here and want to change our country. If there is a problem, you may be able to return to your own country. This will create the jobs we need. The boycott will not do anything, the store is for us. For you, the American imigation are Mexicans who try to change their government, this is not different, stop trying to change us, look at yourselves and cannibalize yourselves and your own country, you will never change ours. The Canadians blame everyone else, you are also the problem". It is the opposite of trying to change Mexico, it is trying to help Mexico keep what it has. And OXXO will eliminate jobs, not create more. Es lo opuesto a tratar de cambiar a México, está tratando de ayudar a México. guarda lo que tiene. Y OXXO eliminará trabajos, no creará más.

Ok for big ugly houses to be built that aren't occupied most of the time(eyesores), but not an Oxxo? Quaint village? That's been gone a long time ago with the hideous "homes" that have been built. But, then again, jobs for the people. I have to agree with Jose after all my pondering.

This morning a Mexican friend told me that one reason he and others are looking forward to this convenience store is convenience--as in the convenience of paying bills, sending money, and buying cellphone time. I had to go to five places a few weeks ago to pay my Telmex bill because one had no "saldo," one had no internet, one wouldn't accept payment on that day and time, and one was closed in the middle of the day. Luckily I was able to pay my bill at the fifth (and last) option, so now I can see my friend's point about the convenience of an Oxxo for purposes like this. | -------------------Re: Oxxo

Have you been to an OXXO? If what they sell is what you buy locally it might hurt them. I will go to A local store enjoy the conversation enjoy the fresh produce and all the wonderful things they have to offer! Maybe the chips will cost a peso more, smiles and conversation are worth 2 pesos! | -------------------Re: Oxxo

¡Hola! Hi everyone!Jose you are not from La Manzanilla and by the way you write you probably are not even mexican, if you want your message to be hear you must be honest so people can trust you. The OXXO is gonna creat like 10 jobs, so no, is not going to creat the jobs we need, is going to affect a few families and benefit the rest we'll be available to pay creditcard, deposit money to bank accounts and pay our bills plus some products the locals won't sell. You are right boycott is not going to work as is not the full town against it some we are ok with it , count my self in . I say let's use OXXO for our needs and always give priority to locals. | -------------------Re: Oxxo

Well if the people of the town want it that changes things. But how many stores in La Manzanilla can compete with OxxO prices? Zero. Soon local stores will close, all the money spent at OxxO will be going out of town instead of being reinvested here, sad day IMO. First thing people will see as they enter our quaint little town is a modern day pimple.

It is sad to imagine the amount of pesos that would normally go to all the small tienda owners around town, going to one mega corporation. It seems to me that if this one is a done deal, then forming a city council is the only way to go up against the next one to come. Who owned the lot? Could they have been persuaded to sell to the city instead? People would pool money together if they had a way to do it. Let local lot owners know about this and give the city "right of first refusal" if they ever decide to sell. I think without a city council, there is not much power to stop more people from selling off their land. Also, maybe not too late to put in requests to at least have Oxxo do something for La Manzanilla... like providing pubic restrooms for all the buses and a maintained garbage and recycle station. | -------------------Re: Oxxo

Michelle - I agree! la Manzanilla stores and venders need and deserve the support of the town. On Salt Spring Island, where I used to live, the whole community decided to not let any fast food restaurant chains (ie MacDonalds, Wendy's, etc) open a business on the island and it is one of the main attractions of the island that, if you're hungry, you eat locally! | -------------------Re: Oxxo

Maybe this would be a good time for people to step up and do something other than voice disdain and concern. Since we don’t control the city or county officials, there is nothing constructive we can do to make them do things the way they are done NotB. Municipal improvements and control are done with our tax dollars and votes NotB. In LM, all of us pay next to nothing in taxes of the goods and services we receive. As owners, the tax is miniscule and as renters, you benefit from low tax costs with low rent. If you don’t want OXXO in town, put together the money and buy the lot they will use and at the same time ask them how much would it cost to make sure they never build in LM. While you are it, take that lot and build public toilets and showers and provide the necessary funds to have them cleaned and maintained. Also, set up a business that will provide the services they provide that many locals find helpful. You could also buy all the land in town and then you could be in charge of who gets to build what and what it looks like and what they sell.

You folks are pretty funny. There are public restrooms across the street at the Casino which is also public parking. Unfortunately, there is not much motivation at the city level to keep them working routinely, let alone clean. Additionally, the odds are better than even that the Ejido sold the property to Oxxo. If not it was one of the older, established families in town. Just because you find it offensive does not mean that the locals will agree. Perhaps they have a totally different perspective. See Ali's post above, she is a smart, ethical business woman. Finally, if you need someone to vent your anger on, ask which "realtor" in town facilitated the sale? Once again you might be surprised. Or perhaps who the Builder will be? Rojo | -------------------Re: Oxxo

I don't use 7-11s or Oxxo much, but am a bit alarmed at the righteous protest of we visitors (even those of you who live there most of the year). It's not like you left places that are perfect and perhaps there are people in the village who will be happy to have this new store. A friend of mine has a job in one nearby and it feeds his family. | -------------------Re: Oxxo

It is what it is, but I hope people will continue to support the locally owned businesses as much as possible. It is important to the local economy. As mentioned earlier, profits from Oxxo will not be staying in La Manzanilla. | -------------------Re: Oxxo
Posted by Holly on May 23, 2019, 10:14 pm, in reply to "Re: Oxxo"
We all make choices. We come to LM for short visits and every peso is spent locally and we will continue to support local businesses. Oxxo will provide conveniences for some people - that is good.... but we don't need it. I will not set foot in it. That is my choice. | -------------------Re: Oxxo
Posted by Brad on May 24, 2019, 9:18 am, in reply to "Re: Oxxo"
Gary ..think that putting it down to simply a "righteous response " is a bit simplistic ..there are bigger issues being touched on here ... our village council here in BC where I live just turned down an application for basically a similar style store ...the arguement that it will provide jobs has merit but can also be a slippery slide ... | -------------------
