Tip Our Garbage Workers!!

Please remember to tip garbage workers for all they do for La Manzanilla and Los Injenios. Taxes paid by everyone here are marginal and thus government pays marginally here. Brave souls on the garbage truck crew collect and deliver garbage to the landfill from households, businesses, and public wastes cans year-round. It is physically hard and dangerous labor. They are truly valiant, underpaid and overworked, especially during Christmas, Easter and school holidays. I understand La Huerta pays an extremely modest sum to only 2 crew members and they and the other workers rely on tips. The truck driver collects and distributes tips to the crew. La Huerta pays another person to deliver dumpsters to the landfill. I assume his pay is also marginal. I think he also deserves tips, especially from households and businesses who deposit their wastes in dumpsters. Speaking of wastes: An individual deployed 5 or 10 public waste cans in Los Ingenios circa 2017. La Manzanilla Hermosa deployed 50 public waste cans in La Manzanilla in 2019 and will add 60 more in 2020 in two batches. We hope to deploy the first 30 cans within 3 months. Timing depends on a truck driver's next seasonal produce run from La Manzanilla to Guadalajara (he is able to return loaded with cans). We will also touch up paint on existing cans this year. Many volunteers remove litter from our beach and streets. Thanks to many, I think the streets, beach, and Bahía de Tenacatita are more plastic-free each year. Less is more. I have to say and have been meaning to post how much cleaner La Manzanilla looks this year. I personally notice a big difference in the lack of garbage strewn about in town. Thank you, Vicki M. and crew, and thank you to our Garbage Guys!!! This little town is getting awfully darn beautiful! Always has been but it's easier to see the beauty without the garbage.

Kudos to those like Vicki and Lisa who got us a cleaner beach and a recycling program with pick up at your door for those items that used to go into landfill! Do not despair about the recycling lot for much longer as it is going to be moved...soon! That site was originally designated for low cost housing for elementary teachers who now cannot afford to live here due to the increase in rents. The Ejido has a site near the community garden and we have folks lined up to both move, clear and hopefully start a fundraiser to get the ball rolling on new casas! News updates as the above happens! But appreciate those that got the clean up in the community going, functioning and perpetuating! | ----------------Re: Recycle lot pictures!

This is not Vicki's responsibility. (The sites you mention are not in her "portfolio.") She deserves praise, not condemnation, for walking the beach daily to collect litter and providing a huge supply of public trash cans to the village at her own expense. | ----------------Re: Recycle lot pictures!

Thanks for your suggestions to tip collectors. Calle Playa Blanca en mi barrio is much cleaner now that we have pickup twice a week. I also paid someone to haul away mattresses they refused to take. Michael | ----------------Re: Tip Our Garbage Workers!!

My question would be how much and how often is reasonable for tipping? | ----------------Re: Tip Our Garbage Workers!!

Good question. I think it is for everyone to decide for themselves. I tip the garbage truck crew 500 pesos once a year. | ----------------Re: Tip Our Garbage Workers!!
