Emergency use of Telcel modem
Posted by Daniel H on July 13, 2021, 12:14 pm
Jan is rrying to arrange a flight to the US for Barry who is very ill, she can't leave the house. The telephone has so much static that the Internet is not usable. I reported her phone to Telmex repair on Saturday but they have not shown up yet. I was thinking that one of those Telcell modems would get her going the quickest but don't know much about them i.e. where to buy, how to get online etc. Perhaps someone could take their Telcell modem to Barry's house and let Jan use it for a couple of hours? Or....... Pretty urgent

Situation solved. I went to Fix it Tony and bought a new Telcell modem, He put $500 pesos of time on the chip and showed me down/up speed 50 Mbs! I took it to Jan, she is online now. I read some of the Telcel post on the board, I think it all depends on line of sight connection with the Cell Tower but I'm not sure on that. | -----------------------Re: Emergency use of Telcel modem

You are doing many valuable favors lately. Good karma, D! | -----------------------Re: Emergency use of Telcel modem

Got lucky on that one, she will give it back when Telmex gets the static off the line. I wanted to have that system to check out the performance in the office, 50 Mb down and up! Its like a junkie finding a new dealer with uncut drugs. | -----------------------Re: Emergency use of Telcel modem

Modems aside, your generosity last night helped me earn 50 USD in just 42 minutes. | -----------------------Re: Emergency use of Telcel modem

Ref speed. I think it depends the most on how many telecell users are accessing the tower, both for internet and for cell phones. You should have luck with it except for Easter and Navidad. Also, when you run out of Mbts it will slow way down until next billing cycle or payment for more data. | -----------------------Telcel modem a story

Thanks Eddie, time will tell. If your bored here is the story of the white modem. A few weeks ago I was showing property (I am going to generalize this so I don't Dox anybody) and I entered into this space where all the doors and windows were closed with the air conditioning on. The person welcomed me and the buyers, I saw them sitting at a chair with a stack of processors and asked what they did? Some kind of video work, they can pack all the computer power they need in a back pack. Behind their head was a white router, I asked about it, they said it was Telcell, the router cost about $150 usd and it was $40 usd per month with 50 Mbs down and up! (They had a direct line of vision to the cell tower). I was obviously impressed, much as a student of mind would be upon meeting a guru, and wanted to kneel at their feet for a time hoping to graduate to a seat next to them to learn. But work took precedence and it hasn't happened yet (maybe someday). About a week or so later I told a friend that I had gone to Manzanillo to have the battery changed in my iPhone. They said Tony Fix could have done that and they are right here in La Manzanilla. I have driven by Tony Fix many times, it always looks closed and in my mind I imagined behind that door was things like washing machines and fans in a various states of disrepair and repair. So now today in search for the white modem solution I thought of Tony Fix (it may have been mentioned in my message board search). So I get into the car and drive there. On the door it says I have to wear a mask... ok I put one on and slide the glass sliding door open to find a computer store/ repair place, a nerd lives here! Be still my beating heart, a surge of endorphins occurs. Tony greets me. On the counter is a box with the great white modem in it. Tony don't speak English and my Spanish is for shit but we manage to get the modem out of the box, put the chip from my cell phone in it and Tony makes it work for me. 50 Mb up and down, big time blood flow. Tony is very accommodating and we work our way from having the chip from my cell phone in the modem to it having its own chip with $500 pesos of credit on it! Tony writes down the very tiny access key from the modem and the phone number. All I have to do is take it to Jan and tell her to plug it in and plug the CAT5 cable into her computer and its a done deal. At Barry's Jan's computer doesn't have a CAT5 cable outlet so she has to find the device on the wireless options. She does, puts in the WPA code that Tony wrote down for me and BAM, she is online big time. I leave. End of story. I hope she finds what Barry needs and give my best to Barry.

Three more cheers for Tony Fix, aka Antonio GIarcia, who is related to all the other Garcias I know. He appears to have the answer to all technical diiculties, and his prices are very reasonable. | -----------------------Re: Telcel modem a story

Hi Daniel and fellow La Manzanillans, I'm Nigel, the strange guy that Daniel encountered who had the AC on and the windows closed Along with my wife Anne I'm getting very attached to La Manz, and we'll probably find a home there sometime over the next year. We first visited LM as the latest of a succession of people who came to you from Lopez Island , north of Seattle. (Its where I am right now, a little island of about 2000 people). I spend a lot of time with tech, having spent 20 years working for Microsoft, and the last 10 years making "augmented reality glasses". I also enjoy AI technology and have done some work with crypto, mostly one called file-coin. However I also want to enjoy less complex things in life and LM has the best of them. Hoping to learn some Spanish, gain some cooking skills, make new friends, and spend at least a little less time in a dark room with my CPUs ! Though hope to find some geek friends too. Hope to make more La Manzanilla connections when we come back in a few weeks. my email is nigel at reality8.com always happy to share what I know if anyone has troubles with Telcel modems or has any common tech interests. Cheers, Nigel Burton.

Nice introduction Nigel, I wish more newcomers did the same. Welcome. When I there you said the Telcel connection was 5G, I mentioned that to Fix it Tony, he said there is only 4G here. Any comment on that? thanks | -----------------------Re: Telcel modem a story

I'm sure its my error - the Telcel (Huawei) modem is branded as a 5G modem. I see 80-100Mbps download and upload, but more importantly I've yet to see the service go down.

......good to see you choose La Manz, Melaque and area to settle down in Nigel... you'll find a rich collection of eclectic ex-pats many of whom lurk on here. Put in a preorder for Starlink.$99 gets you in line for a pre order and to be one of the early adopters in the area. Speeds we can only dream of, 200mbps and more and many folks are getting as low as 25ms ping; game away with that latency. This is reality in the States and Canada now. Starlink has been fully authorized in Mexico, in fact IFE (Mexico's FCC) has given Starlink until October 28 to get the rollout going. I can hardly wait for my "Dishy Mc FlatFace" (Musk's sense of humour) | ----------------------- |
