Scorpions
Posted by Andrew on September 5, 2021, 6:07 pm
My wife and I just moved here. First week in our house and she got stung by a scorpion. We were able to get Alejandro to help us to Cihuatlan emergency for anti venom. (thanks Alejandro and helper). Needless to say we would like to not do this again. Any thoughts or ideas to prevent the little rascals from entering and ruining a night sleep would be appreciated. Preferred pet friendly. | -------------------Re: Scorpions

Javier the pharmacist and owner of Farmacia Melaque told me that if I went to the Centro de Salud because of a scorpion sting that I would be either injected with given an I.V. drip of Cloropirama. Cloropyramine is an over-the-counter super-antihistamine. My first scorpion sting nearly killed me. The second scorpion sting I used the cloropiramine and was fine in only a few hours, it went to work right away. It is about 200 pesos for a box of 25 tablets and a great addition to your home medical supplies. One tablet can save a trip to the clinic. It is low dosage with no noticeable side effects for me other than I am now a committed convert. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chloropyramine

Wow, Monte, you are a miracle treasure trove of useful information. Thank you so much for this! Will get some this week. Do you know by any chance if this product can be administed to a dog? (Since you seem to know something about everything, I thought I'd ask) | -------------------Re: Scorpions

Please correct me if I'm wrong, and I'm writing from Canada, but we've been coming there for 13 years and have never been stung but we have a few basic credos. We never leave our feet uncovered by shoes or flip flops, unless we're in bed. Shoes are always on! Also, never leave clothes or things of cloth, like towels, lying on the floor. The critters like to hide in them. We use the flashlights on our phones to see our way to the toilet at night, so we don't stumble on a scorpion but we have our shoes on, so it should be alright. Check the inside of shoes before putting them on. If you don't have an Epipen, you might get someone from the US or Canada to see if they can get you one. (Prescription required though.) The local ambulance has several pens we've left them over the years, in the event of a sting that you're really reacting to. (The pens were expired but a quick search on the internet of several reliable sites indicated that they far outlast their expiry dates.) Dra. Marta at La Farmacia by the church has antivenom. She saved Jim's wife several years ago. (I'm sorry. I've forgotten her name.) No need to go out of town. Again, if anything has changed since last year, please correct me. Or if you think I'm wrong also correct me. It's too important to get this wrong. Vicki | -------------------Re: Scorpions

Hi Andrew ~ and welcome to La Manzanilla! Every 6 months I have Gilberto, known in town as Sombra, spray my house and surrounding garden with a combination of “natural” ingredients (I don’t know and probably wouldn’t understand what they were if I asked). He lives local and many years ago was our Delegado. His phone number is 315-113-7128 or 315-100-8552. He speaks English, which makes the process so much easier when you haven’t mastered the Spanish language yet. Hope this helps you! | -------------------Morfina exterminator's #

Scorpions glow extremely white under black light, even clear across a room. We keep black light flashlights next our bed. I walk around barefoot without any fear of stepping on a scorpion at night. | -------------------black light flashlight

Gilberto is one and the same as posted earlier. I call him Gilbert. He has done a lot of work for me when we've been there...honest and reliable which is why I recommended him. | -------------------Re: Gilberto for all Pests

I have heard that a good country bred Chihuahua will kill, spiders, Canclose, Scorpions, mice, rats, and snakes. Is that true? If so I like a dog that contributes to the pack | -------------------Re: Gilberto for all Pests

There is another fool proof way that involves no chemicals. Take a get a small block of wood and a small hammer. Place the creature on the block and rap it sharply with the hammer. | -------------------Scorpion on a block of wood

One does not simply put a Scorpion on a block of wood. | -------------------Re: Scorpion on a block of wood

Speaking of scorpions, in the mountains around lake Atitlan there are larger and less damaging scorpions. A "cute" trick some young indian girls liked to do was to tell someone to close their eyes and open their hands. They would then drop a live scorpion into their hands. They would have somehow caught and pulled off the stinger of these same scorpions. Very talented indians, indeed. | -------------------Re: Scorpion on a block of wood

Buy the locally made door circular door stops for keeping critters from entering your home from under the door, or use old towels. You can buy a hand pump and poison in Melaque and spray it yourself or have a helper or gardener do it for you. I have been doing it this way for many years but I do not have an animal to worry about as for as poisoning. Good luck! | -------------------Re: Scorpion on a block of wood

You could also get a cat(s), which apparently knows how to kill scorpions without getting stung. (This has been my experience.) Also, keep sink and shower drains covered when not in use. | -------------------
