What is the latest info on covid infections in town? I'd like to come down but I'm leary. Hope to get a booster shot soon. | -------------------Re: covid news

Hola, Peter. Per usual, no one is talking as Covid-19 cases are not readily shared in his community, something I don't understand. However, one change has occurred in that many of the deaths have been attributed to the virus instead of to other causes such as heart attacks, asthma, pneumonia, etc. But the contagion in LM, as in all of Mexico, seems to be easing, perhaps because of vaccination. Several weeks ago we had deaths in town, eight to ten by my count, that finally convinced a lot of the town's residents that the bug is real and that it can be deadly. I lost a cherished, local resident friend that couldn't be bothered to do a vaccination. So more people are wearing masks and businesses seem to be taking protective measures, a bit on the loose side, but something at least. I don't know if the Delta Variant has appeared but because of so many deaths between vulnerable people in a short period of time, I'm suspicious. Delta is virulent and catchy. I should ask the Delegado or the local clinic for stats and if they know if Delta has hit here. Myself and other expats, vaccinated and not, are going about our business with and without a lot of precaution. So I guess you'll have to evaluate what you are comfortable with. I myself, vaxed, feel pretty safe going about but wear a mask and visit, pretty much, only open, ventilated places. I keep reminding myself to be attentive and careful. So far, so good. With the variant about I think one should stay alert. My two cents, Cruz

Great summary Cruz, IMO Was intense about a month ago, lots of compliance / prevention / concern, easing now. If I were to sum it up in comparison to the news I read in other parts or the world (lookin at you Australia) I would use the word balanced. | -------------------Re: covid news

A woman that works at the administration leve lin the school system in Melaque told her husband who told me that the in-class students are being tested 3 times weekly and are showing an 80% infection rate. As I found this to be way far high and astounding, 4 days later I reconfirmed that 80% is indeed the number. | -------------------Re: covid news

The source of your re confirmation is ...? The idea behind testing is to find the positives and isolate them (or at least do something). It doesn't make much sense to test 3 times a week or even once a month if your not taking some kind of action. "the in-class students are being tested 3 times weekly and are showing an 80% infection rate.} Its like you are saying Juan tested positive on Monday, its Wednesday lets test him again Also I think you mean that 80% have tested positive at some point, not all at once.

Thanks, Daniel, for questioning and clarifying Monte's information. And I thank Monte for his report and I hope that Monte can inform us of his source. It could be very, very important, although horrific, news for us, especially for those with kids attending school. When we were experiencing all those Covid deaths in LM, Melaque and Cihuatlan were experiencing theirs. This entire region was scrambling for oxygen, meds and hospital care. It was awful. A lot of suffering we haven't recovered from. Our town feels a little somber. A POTENTIAL 80% INFECTION RATE in school kids is nothing to ignore. It is important for people to anticipate another possible Covid bloom brought on by conditions in schools that might propagate the spread. Unnecessary and untimely deaths, not to mention the infection experience itself, can and should be avoided. It is possible. So please, Monte, let us know. I respect and believe your reporting and don't question it. But in these times, a rumor of this magnitude should be verified, even though we should be ever vigilant anyway. Ran across this article a moment ago. "The sheer numbers can make it seem like children are getting sicker with the delta variant, but experts say that does not appear to be the case. Most infected kids have mild infections or no symptoms and do not need to be hospitalized." https://apnews.com/article/delta-variant-coronavirus-kids-4035798709ec77b8acaf96a49d48acfa I don't want to jump too far into the fray on this quagmire but it is an example of what I meant when I said that the response here in La Manzanilla is balanced. Numbers look bad but what is actually happening to the kids is more the focus and response locally, not a policy set by a politician covering their ass. | -------------------Re: covid news

Hola, Daniel. I'm not as concerned for the kids as I am for the spread to every one else in the community. Infected kids mostly fare better than infected oldsters, the vulnerable and those not vaccinated. The kids in their school setting seem to or might be more likely to infect each other. Then they take the bug home and elsewhere all over town. Children have always been recognized as good spreaders. So,if indeed 80% of those children tested in Melaque are infected, isn't it likely that contagion is on its way if preventive measures aren't taken? As you mentioned, isolation. This is my concern. Sept. 14 is the day that I was told of the covid testing in the school. It is now Sept. 23 so things may or may not have changed since then. I personally would like to provide you with the source information however as the source is a woman working in the administration of the school I will not risk her job security, or any possible community ramifications by outing her. Her husband and family I know personally and I trust information from them. Recently I outed a person(s) that had told me that they had covid in an attempt to forewarn others in contact with them and the repercussions are not pleasant. All known covid carriers in my humble opinion should be known in a community. Not only to avoid contact but more importantly, if those persons fall sick, they could need help. Of most concern my still humble opinion, is that children returning home are spending time with parents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, pets (yes, animals contract covid as well). Many of the adults work in businesses and are further sources of possible contagion. On a possible positive note, the woman did not say that the children were ill, only carriers. Making lemonade from lemons, perhaps this is an indication of herd immunity kicking in. I cannot answer anymore questions because I have said exactly what I was told and to say otherwise would only be to speculate which I do not have time or desire for. | -------------------Re: covid news

Thanks for all the input. Missing is pertinent info re: the populous of La Manzanilla. Are infections diminishing? Are people wearing masks? What percentage of the town is vaccinated? Why are buses from large cities permitted? Economic impact? Of course. Egregious that the puebla's leaders permit crowded buses from the hinterlands to bring in hordes of tourists. Absolutely unconscionable. Peter Prunuske | -------------------Re: covid news

You missed this post about the right to access the beach? Perhaps La Manzanilla is not the right choice for you. Try Manzanillo or PV.

To add to this…in from a friend and teacher…there have been cases of kids with covid here in both telesecondaria and the elementary schools….and masks are required at both! The kinder school does not have recesses but the kids are separated in inside spaces and although cases in kids can be less serious than adults, they can still spread to those they come into contact with! My source disinfects her kids when they come home at the door and then washes their uniforms, daily, as an extra protection! This family had a serious case but is now healed so I totally understand their caution! As for other cases in the Pueblo, the Delegado tells me they are lowered with only one serious in an older woman at present! Folks are more cautious, masks are still being worn by many and there is still great sadness at the number of folks that passed due to covid over the past few months, in my estimation at least 15 that I am aware of! Many locals ask me what I think will happen in this upcoming season and I really have no idea! I get emails and texts asking the same from folks NOB and my stock reply is..if you are cautious where you are in the North..then be cautious when you arrive here….but remember that available health care here might be less available than where you are coming from…in case! No fear, just saying, be cautious and take preventative measures and enjoy the beaches and the locals! | -------------------Re: covid news

Thanks for the update Steph, "...and masks are required at both!" Is that a local choice or gov mandated? | -------------------Re: covid news

I am told it is a government mandate! | -------------------Re: covid news

On the country level as far as I can tell (didn't search much) "The Ministry of Public Education (SEP) drew up a range of guidelines aimed at ensuring a safe return to the classroom — among which are social distancing, wearing face masks and frequent handwashing – " "Increasing the likelihood of transmission is the fact that the highly contagious delta strain spreads more readily among children than earlier variants of the virus." Well hello, that is true for everyone, not just children. Then they have a photo of children none of which are social distancing or wearing a mask. Arghhh. I stopped reading after that. https://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/after-17-months-schools-reopen-for-in-person-classes/ So I stand corrected on my balanced "not a policy set by a politician covering their ass" statement above.

I’ve not read anything in this thread about vaccinations. Virtually any news source in the US says most of the hospitalizations here are non vaccinated patients. Kids here 12 and older are getting vaccinated and possibly before Halloween younger kids will be eligible. Are people still getting vaccinated? | -------------------Re: The worst advice is...

How do we do our own research? Conduct a door-to-door survey? That is not likely to happen. If the original poster knows La Manz, he would already know that there will probably never be confirmed answers to most of his questions. | -------------------Mexico to use only Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine on at-risk kids

FYI A Mexican friend who had Covid was too embarrassed to admit it, so she went around with Covid, possibly spreading it as her mask was low quality. I understood from another friend that she was thinking she would be shunned if she admitted To having it so she kept it a secret. I was upset at first but glad she recovered. I don’t know who she infected but I’m glad it wasn’t me, as I remain 95% of the time in isolation, happily editing my new book and enjoying the great outdoors. Blessings to you all For a little while longer isolation is still your best way to keep from getting it. | -------------------Autlan Hospital Full

Reported by Perla, Chago's sister-in-law. When the family tried to get attention for Chago's broken femur at the public hospital in Autlan, they were turned away because the hospital is up to its ears in Covid cases Then the family went around to four different private hospitals looking for the cheapest rate. Perla's story is one of the few ways that we get a picture of Covid activity in our region. It also illustrates the impact on available health services and cost to non-Covid residents. From being covered by public health care, the family went scrambling to cover a 70,000 peso fee, the lowest they found in their search, not to mention Chago's suffering as they searched in a hot vehicle. I can't imagine. Add this to the Covid picture of LM. Cruz

Well the board is built under a "take responsibility for your opinion" framework. It doesn't always work out that way, especially since Boardhost totally respected the GDPR (which was passed a few years ago for Europe), and limited the moderators (me) ability to keep the board true to its - take responsibility - roots by blocking the complete IP address and eliminating email addresses. But we forge on through the fog. Personally I like both formats, poster known and poster unknown (like Reddit), each has its place. The latter of the two taking a lot more work as moderator. Mainly because when people are anonymous the tend to say shit they would never say if you knew who they were. | -------------------Re: Peter Prunuske???
